Has anyone here had a problem with Zonealarm after installing the latest Windows update? I've heard of 5 computers in the past 2 days that have had a problem where the owner couldn't connect online after installing the update and rebooting. Switching to a different firewall fixed the problem.

I was just about to ask in the AV thread, Wayne- I was wondering if it was Avast, which I just started using.

Yes, the Update made ZA very annoyed, and I had to shut it down in order to come online.

I'd be happy to know the workaround for this.

Why do people download the updates, several times on eater, people have advised me to turn off Windows updates.

The last time I downloaded an update, last year some time, one of their security patches had an error on it, it screwed up numerous computers around the world, they did issue another fix for the faulty patch, but the initial bad download screwed up the system restore on my laptop, it still doesn't work now as far as I know.

Zone Alarm's website has a fix for the problem. It was caused by the latest Microsoft update conflicting with ZA.

When it did it to mine, I switched to Ashampoo firewall to see if it was ZA, because ZA has fallen down on me before and it fixed the problem. I mentioned it to a friend last night. Today my wife's did the same, so to be sure I switched to Ashampoo on hers as well. Then an hour ago my friend got back to me and said 3 other people had had the same problem today. That's when I decided to post to see if anyone else had had the same problem.

(edit) and if you think about it, you wouldn't be able to get online to read the fix on the Zonealarm site if your firewall won't allow you internet access Laughing

Wayne, the workaround I chose for was to set my security from High to Medium in ZA and that did the trick for now. It's just temporary, but I'll live with it until I research the update and probably remove it.

^ ^ The patch you'll need to uninstall is KB951748.

This is where I found the fix for the ZA Microsoft patch conflict:

http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

My neighbor uninstalled the Microsoft update, but it keeps coming right back. I use ZA Pro and just d/l the new file, ran it, and everything worked fine.

This is why I disable Auto-Update and d/l and install patches manually. Otherwise you're right, bloody Windows will keep trying to install it.

I had the same problem with ZA. I never heard of Ashampoo before, I downloaded it and am using it now, it sure has a nifty GUI. I am going to drive it around for a bit. Thanks.

Just asking (am a noob when it comes to internet security), but is Ashampoo a free download? I normally run Norton on both my computers, but I am considering switching to free firewall and anti-virus software on my (non-baiting) laptop to save a few bucks. I was thinking of ZA+Avast, but if Ashampoo can do the job as well, then I'm a happy camper Very Happy

There is, nor was there, any problem with the Windows patch.
The problem was only with ZoneAlarm users, as suggested by the title of this thread.

Knocking Windows is never out of fashion but, this time, it isn't their fault (even though it has been suggested that Microsoft should have checked the patch against 'popular software firewalls').
