Denial of service attack.
Basically the site was targeted by bots flooding it with requests which meant no one could log on or sometimes the site was totally unavailable.
The admins worked really hard and sorted it out ( I'm spinning round and spitting for anyone that's superstitious )
Some other sites were attacked at the same time

And if I recall it was the VLads in the Eastern Block Countries, much more organized. They spent a LOT of money to do that and yet here we are.
