Seeing as it's the night... no... make that morning Sad for changing to Linux...

Hmm...

This may be an interesting journey.

I have linux installed on my formerly screwed up desktop. Can mount hard screwed up hard disks with damaged vista installation and copy files off them now Smile

Am connected to the router by wireless (this is a good thing, as the router is in a different room). It was fantastic. It just worked! And if I check the dchp client list for the router on the laptop, the computer is there and everything! Very Happy

I wonder how I get it to connect to the internet though... any advice? :S

Well, if you're connected to the router and got an IP from it then also all the other information (DNS, Default Gateway) should have been received and activated.

You can try the following:
/sbin/route -n
This should show you the IP of your router, if not the default gateway is not set (correctly).
If the IP of your router shows up try
ping 64.233.189.147
If this works you can access the Internet. That IP is Google, just for your information.
Also if this works next try
ping www.google.com
If this does not work you don't have valid DNS-entries. This can be checked with
cat /etc/resolv.conf
This should contain at least one IP (either the one of your router, if it offers DNS, or an external one).
If it shows an external IP, ping it and see if it works.

After that I guess you might have a bit of info to come back with.

Odd. My linux machines connect to the internet via ethernet and they have always just gone straight through instantly without any tinkering.

Intuition tells me it's either browser settings or router settings.

I'd have ditched the wireless and punched a 10mm hole for the cable by now Wink

Thanks for the advice...

First thingy shows IP of the router sure enough, and both pings work... well - 85% packet loss on the second. The last thing gives nameserver as the router address and search as the network name.

I'd love to punch a 10mm hole in the wall (and also the floor / ceiling). But it's a shared house and people might come and punch a 10mm hole in me...

Also - the modem is on. I think. Well, I hope. If it's not then all this is a dream...

^^^^ Open up a Terminal Session and type that in.

Basically if you are connected to the router then you should be on the internet unless something is happening on the router side of things which I doubt. IN either case power cycling the router will clear up any problems.

It's got worse. It can't connect at all today. It's also crashed twice, which is not something I was expecting Linux to do Sad.

Linux didn't do it. The operator did. If it worked once and not now you did something different at some point to change something.

And Kubuntu shouldn't need for you to use the command line to set up the wifi. KDE has wizards that help you set find, install and initialize the connections.

I didn't change anything since the last time - I just turned it off and on again!

I think it might be some kind of hardware incompatibility. Mounting disks is variable, and copying data from a memory card died halfway and wouldn't start again. It also has a habit of crashing in it's sleep.

Maybe try another version and see if it likes my computer better...

Which computer? Which hardware? Linux is usually compatible with most hardware. Actually the older the better. But lately just the cutting edge hardware should have some problems and those problems are diminishing.

Could this have something to do with it? Because from what you describe it is the hardware not the software.
