I'm a sociologist. Heh. Although I am certainly not doing a study (now, anyways - I'll let y'all know if that changes) on scamming and baiting, I am as interested in the baiters as I am in the scammers. The subculture of 419 scamming, and the subculture and communities that arise to combat it in any way possible are just so fascinating to me. The vigilantism makes me feel a little uncomfortable, and I am ethically torn about my own role baiting (and the amusement I get from it), but am willing to ride my discomfort for a bit and see what I can learn.

Go to http://scamwarners.com/ and read the results of victims being fleeced, their lives ruined, an then re-examine the feelings you have about... um, vigilantism. Ethically, sending them to eat sand in Chad is fine, for me. Any time we waste of these scum is time well spent. If we can get amusement out of it, too, and I certainly do, so much the better.

Also, if you really feel uncomfortable with safaris to hell, getting lads to provide eye scans crom copy machines, etc, etc, straight baiting is good, the cheque scams are great to interrupt, you can become a site killer and hunt fraudulent sites (very satisfying, I come to it later in my baiting carrees). The main thing is not to compromise your morals. Do what you feel good about, and let everyone else do what they feel good about.

What we do here is not vigilantism.

This would be vigilantism:

I have a speed limit sign of 35 on the edge of my property and my neighbor's next door. Some wingnutted kids got a hold of black shoe polish and changed the '3' to an '8'.

I washed it off.

Now, let's say my Police didn't do anything about that, and it happened again, and this time, since I live semi-rurally, some stranger to my area thought that was the real posted speed...and then killed one of the many little children that live on my street when a parent was backing out the car with the child inside.

Then, I went out and tracked these teen-agers down and killed them.

That would be vigilantism.

We just mess with people or take down their fake sites.

Patriot, baiters have made it possible for LEOs to make arrests - and then the law takes its course.

I mean, I know I wouldn't want to contribute to another human beings death. No matter how scummy they were. But hey, what does petty morality have to do with anything.

Baiters like us take action against scammers instead of the law and that is all that is needed to be a vigilante.

AGain, go to http://scamwarners.com/ and read all the ruined lives, people who have basically fucked them selves, their families, and their friends to send money to these pieces of shit. Read about people who have committed suicide when the truth dawned on them they had just sent their childrens college money off to some scammer. These pieces of shit have no feeling of remorse, none. In fact, they celebrate their cleverness.

Therefore, if Stinkyboi and the Leg end up buried in sand in Chad, I would not feel sad at all. Tough shit. They played the game. They were the instigator. They lost. You are watching three extraordinarily talented baiters turn the table on some scammers. More power to them.

I am not a vigliante. I am a social engineer. I do not coerce, I do not punish. I mislead. I lie. I make empty promises. Just like they do. The difference is that they are thieves who want to steal, and I am someone who likes to make them make fools of themselves, knowing that while they do that, they are not stealing from some one else.

Also, except for mass baits, I never bait someone who did not send an email to my personal email account.

Sigh. Yes, I understand all the lives that have been ruined, I know how devastating it is and how heartless these scammers are. I know all that. And I understand those who say it isn't vigilantism. Well, I think that the part of scamming where we try to get info to shut them down isn't vigilantism, but the part where we send them on safaris... that's cutting it a little close. As the good doctor said though, I can keep straight baiting and stay where I'm comfortable and be ok with others drawing their line a bit further.

Really, though, I am pretty much just an ethically conflicted person. I am deathly afraid of spiders, yet refuse to kill them. I (or my partner) carries them outside, one by one, and gently releases them where they'll be safe. Scambaiting is the most dishonest thing I've done in my life. Smile

If you want to think of yourself like that, knock yourself out. Vigilante is just a sexed up word the media and others like to use because it sounds neat...sort of like 'factually inaccurate'.

I, and most of us here, just screw with people because we are smart asses and like to with screw people, in this case they happen to be bullies, thugs and criminals. Some of us get sites killed, no different than reporting your neighbor for breaking the law by stealing cable.

Vigilante is just a bullshit word used by people who want to make baiting sound way cooler than the tedious, repetitive, and mostly mind-numbingly boring game that it is.

Look at it this way.

If we were vigilanties we'd be actively hunting down, and dispensing justice on, the Lads. Baiting is waiting for a lad to come, then wasting their time in any way possible to keep them away from causing crimes with real victims.

Safari's are the ultimate time waster. If they die, boo hoo, a person died, but their time is now infinitely wasted since they pursured crime so far as to lose all their time for it.

I just got here. Found a link to this place on another site somewhere, I began reading Shiver's stories and was hooked.

I had done some minor scambaiting in the past as I get a sick and sadistic thrill out of annoying bad people and the jerks of the world. So when I found this site out on the net I was thrilled.

What kind of people are these that they would go so far as destroy lives, and manipulate others (under the facade of love, religion, legality, etc... )into giving up their life savings? These scammers are the lowest life forms on Earth, and if they would be so willing to ruin lives like they do, then they deserve justice in some form or another.

I like making bad people miserable, and I like beating them at their own game.
