I saw a thing on the news I think it was MSNBC about a tv commercial in Nigeria that glorified 419 scamming. Does anyone know if this is on the internet?

The guy in the music video is named Nkem Owoh. He is an african musician and movie star. I believe the song is called 'i go chop your dolla' - it was extremely popular in Africa and I believe at one point it was outlawed in nigeria. Nkem Owoh was arrested in a raid on an internet cafe (in amsterdam, i believe) for 419. The song is basically the lads' anthem.

Just a small correction. The guy's name is not Uzodinma Okpechi it appears, although the song's video on youtube says that is the guy's name.

It gives a rather simplified view of the nature of Nigerian scamming culture.

Yahoo boys are seen as local heroes as a lot of the money they get is spent in and around the local community. Right or not, the locals feel they are only getting back what was stolen from them in the past. It's not unusual for riots or gun fights to break out during or after a EFCC raid.

There is huge dissatisfaction with anyone in authority as the corruption culture runs from top to bottom in that society. The sad thing is, Nigeria is going through an unprecedented boom at the moment due to rising international oil prices, but very few Nigerians will ever get to see the benefit. Most of the oil industry workforce in the Niger delta is foreign (about 70%), locals only get the jobs that are too dangerous for anyone else to do. The government has pledged to use the extra revenue on electrifying the whole country. An estimated ten/fifteen billion dollar windfall will get nowhere near it's intended recipients though and the people know that.
The net result will be even more lads with an even bigger grudge and axe to grind. And so it goes. Sad

The video does reveal a lot about how scammers are perceived. The first scammers of the 1980s are the ones that are idealized. They made their money by scamming foreigners that were trying to make under-the-table deals to get their hands on Nigerian resources. You can see in the video how the victims are wealthy foreigners. Of course, victims today aren't so much wealthy foreigners as gullible middle-class schmucks, but it looks like in the minds of scammers, they're still modern-day Robin Hoods. Rolling Eyes

What about the elderly?What about the charity scams where it looks like you are helping a bunch of orphans?What about the puppy scammers where it looks like a straight up purchase?To try and paint the victims with such a broad brush is overly simplistic.

"I Go Chop Your Dolla" comes from the movie "The Master", starring Nkem Owoh (who also goes by the name Uzodinma Okpechi). And yes, he was later arrested in Amsterdam for 419 fraud.

I bought a DVD of "The Master" a few years ago. It's a low-budget production but a fascinating cultural study in which ultimately the ertswhile hero finds that 419 is a dangerous game. Along the way the movie shows that these guys do not target only rich westerners, but happily scam their own countrymen whenever the opportunity arises. The first scam that the lead character undertakes when he goes to work for a major oga is an elaborate (and very successful) plot to rip off a local businessman. (And this was after he had been scammed himself by that same oga.) Only a little bit is shown of 'yahoo bois' but the movie shows how sophisticated some of the gangs can be. Not every scammer is a loner in an Internet cafe. There are well-organized gangs using every imaginable scam trying to steal from victims literally all over the world, not just the west.

That's a very unfair disparagement of an entire nationality. Yes, there are plenty of scammers operating out of Nigeria, but they do not represent the entire country.
