Absolute, total shock. He was bleeping brilliant, a true genius who could make comedy out of absolutely anything. And not just comedy, but literally fall-out-your-chair-and-roll-on-the-floor-gasping-for-breath-laugh-out-loud hilarity. Damn, I'm going to miss him. Crying or Very sad

Edit: there's tons of his stuff on Youtube, I remember spending hours surfing through his routines a year or two ago and laughing until I cried. Did I mention that I'll miss him?

This is absolutely devestating. He has been one of my icons since I was a child. I can still quote most of his earlier work word for word.

I saw george carlin twice live. once at the milwaukee arena. and then the next day at the restaurant that is was a chef at. in milw. one of the funnyest shows I ever seen. and he tips very well for good service. he had the wait staff laughing there asses off in the dining room and popped into the kitchen to thank us for a wonderful meal. very nice man, but you could tell other than when he was on stage, he was a quiet gentle person.
the owner of the restaurant saw him in 72 when he got arrested for doing the 7 words. to contravesal for the day.

Very sad. Loved him in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure when I was younger. His comedy is pretty groundbreaking.

One of my favorite stories is about Lenny Bruce. When Lenny was arrested at a comedy club for obscenity, the cops started to question people in the crowd, asking for ID's. Well George Carlin refused to show his ID to the cops and was arrested along with Lenny Bruce. George was then able to spend some time with Lenny Bruce in a paddy wagon. Lenny was definitely a strong influence on George and his comedy.

I remember listening to his 7 dirty words record in middle school. I could only remember two of the words and had to Wiki them. RIP George, I'll miss your cocaine fueled humor.

Tis a sad day indeed. George Carlin had a Fort Worth connection. In 1959 he did the 7 pm to midnight shift at KXOL radio station. When he finished his shift he would go to The Cellar night club and do standup routines. The Cellar was a infamous place in Fort Worth. They were the first to have women in skimpy clothing go-go dancing on table tops. George fit right in.

The Cellar also was the place where the Secret Service men partied the night before President Kennedy was shot in Dallas. Kennedy had spent the day and night in Fort Worth previous to his death.

Aw, man.

I used one of his lines for a yearbook quote- "May the forces of evil always get confused on the way to your house". Then I found a lot of funny quotes by him on the internet, and came out with the mistaken impression that he was Safe For Work. Then I bought a book of his in an airport, in full veiw of my parents...

Funny guy. He will be missed.

So sad. Late in life he was more angry than funny, but the kind of angry that as you listened to him you found yourself nodding and agreeing, and getting a bit angry too. He was a fantastic linguist and sociologist (and I say this as a sociologist - oops, now I'm out of the closet!). He will be missed.
