I'm a teacher and I posed an ad on cl. I just got an email response yesterday from a scammer. According to her, she just got a job in Spain, but her 12 year old son and nanny are here, and her son needs tutoring. She wants to send me $2500 to cover my expenses, and then she'd also like to send me more so that I can be responsible for paying the nanny. Of course, she wants to WU me this money.

It sucks too, because I'm looking for summer work, and having to dig through scams is a PITA. I don't plan to bait the guy, because even though I love this site, I just don't feel like I'd be any good at it (and anyway, it's my real email address). But, I'd love to send the person over to someone who wants to scambait.

Tutoring scams are new to me, but it looks like, like everything else, they're all over the place.

Below are the emails from my scammer. Unfortunatly I was answering a number of emails at the time, and I didn't really catch the cashiers check tip off the first time around, so I did give the guy my cell phone number, which I'm hoping won't turn out to be a nightmare.

Hello........Thank for getting back to me , My son is 12 years old I could have love to meet you in person before starting the lesson but i have just been transfer from work to Spain that is the more reason why i will not be able to meet you,and my son will come down to your location for the lesson because i have already make arrangement with a nanny that will be taking care of him for his period of tutoring I have make contacts with my son concerning the arrangement of the tutoring which he told me he's ok with him and i want you to know that i am going to pay for 1 month, and i will like to pay you through a cashier check so do get back to me with your Full name to be on the check, your full home address, and your cell phone number...Thanks

Hello thanks for the information you sent....So i will like you to help me to take good care of my son and the nanny and promise me that you will teach my son a good thing in life , so i want you to help me out on this , am sending you a check of 2500$ so as soon as you get the check just take it to your bank get it cash/deposit in your account as soon as you cash the check you will deduct you teaching funds and also deduct 60$ for your self just for your running around and help me get the rest wire to the nanny via Money Gram Money Transfer so that they can use the moeny to take there flight to your location and rent an apartment near your location and get some necessary the lesson ......Let me know maybe i can trust you with the nanny funds...

Looking forward to meet my son and the nanny !!!

Hi tigger and welcome Very Happy

The check will be fake....the bank may cash it, you send the overage on to the nanny and when the bank discovers the fraud, you will be held responsible for repayment.
If you plan on baiting this lad, please don't do it from your email address. Cut and paste the scam to a baiting account and respond from.

Happy baiting Very Happy

sheboppe, sorry, I'm newbie to forums!

I'm not going to bait this one because I really don't know what I'm doing, and since it started with my real email I won't go there. But, I do find the whole thing pretty compelling, and if I had the experience, I'd love to mess with this one.

It's okay tigger, all is well. Very Happy

Does this "tutor" have a website that promotes his services?

That's the thing. I'm the tutor. "She" is the client who wants to pay me by WU because she's out of the country and the nanny will be watching her kid for the summer. So, it looks like the scam is that I'll get a lump sum check, that I'm supposed to cash, take my cut and then send the rest to the "nanny" so she can get set up with the kid in a nearby town. This area has a lot of international families, so the traveling mom and nanny care kid didn't throw me right away, until I looked at the whole thing and broke it down. I feel like this one could be a lot of fun, but not for me since this person has my real email (Before I figured it out, I gave out my email). I'd love to pass this one off to someone else if anyone is up for scambaiting this one. Since I'm new to this, I don't know if that's done, but I just hate the fact that this guy is out there praying on teachers, many of whom would be slow to catch onto this scam. Plus, I'm pissed that it took me a day to figure it out, and, selfishly, I want payback.

My mistake, I scanned the letter too quickly. Very Happy

If you have the headers of the scam mail, you can post the letter with the headers in the surplus letters forum so that others can bait him.
