He overpaid to my fake paypal account

I advertized a laptop on Craigslist and he asked for my paypal email. I gave him a made up one, same as my baiter email. Then I get an official looking email from [email protected] saying the account has received cash! I couldn't believe it! So I replied

can't anybody pay you cash regardless of whether you have paypal account, so long they can send it to your email address? i think then you'd have to make an account to retrieve it, but it still could have happened, i think.

Not sure about that, it should have been rejected immediately on his end. He even sent me an actual address where to send my laptop to.

To an email account not registered with paypal therefore not having a bank account or credit card to pay to? I think the email might have been spoofed to look like it's from paypal? Confused

Edit: login on paypal. Check if there has been a payment or not. If so, probably stolen details, if not, spoofed address. Tell him you'd rather use an escrow for this kind of thing. If he gives you a fake one, you can get it shut down and get yourself something shiny for your sig.

I would put money (though not by PayPal) that this is still a scam and the scammer has hijacked someone's PayPal account. I would suggest PMing a Mod about what to do next.

Don't try to collct the cash. That would be Cash Baiting and it is a real No No. Check with a Mod (in green apron).

I think I would try to find a way to involve PayPal fraud to get the account sorted because I am sure that it was hijacked.

My guess is that you received a spoofed paypay verification of funds paid page. To a victim, the page appears authentic, they send the goods only to discover that no payment has been made after the fact.

Lads do often use stolen credit cards to make paypal payments, however I don't believe this is what's happened here as you recieved the verification to a baiting addy that does not have a paypal account.

I would at the very least, log into my paypal acct and check for the funds.
I told him I probably will not send him the laptop because I still use it for games and email even though he paid me. I would not imagine he feels "ripped off" however.

If a user doesn't have a paypal account registered to a particular e-mail, they'll still get a confirmation e-mail if they get a real payment. This e-mail will encourage them to sign up for a PayPal account.

Now, if the e-mail doesn't say to sign up for a Paypal account (and this e-mail address obviously doesn't have a paypal account) then it is a fake.

We don't ask scammers to send money. That is cash baiting and Eater doesn ot condone it and we don't do it. Evil or Very Mad

@ TbScam, as has been mentioned more than once above, cash baiting is a no no on this forum, we don't condone it, when it's discussed, topics get locked. What you do in your own time is up to you, just don't post about cash baiting on here.

Apart from possibly being a spoofed PayPal email, lads are also known to use phished PayPal accounts, they send the money to their victims from the phished account, then when it all goes tits up, the person that the police come after is the person who received the money, so don't even think about accepting anything from PayPal, I'm locking this on my way out.
