Yea, the day after I get a lottery winning announcement from hotmail.uk
http://news.google.com/?ncl=1216568715&hl=en&topic=t
"Yahoo said it has filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in New York
against "Yahoo Lottery Spammers" who use the company's name to fool
users into divulging personal information that are then used in identity
scams. . . "
like that's gonna stop them?
LOL! |

And while Yahoo doesn't yet know the identities of the spammers, it hopes it can find them by subpoenaing "email service providers, such as EarthLink and GoDaddy." |
Good luck to them...

The one thing that strikes us as a little curious here is the timing of the lawsuit. These scams have been around almost as long as the internet -- why would Yahoo finally decide to sue now? It probably has something to do with a $234 million judgment for MySpace in a case against "spam king" Sanford Wallace. The judgment, believed to be the largest anti-spam award, came shortly before Yahoo filed its complaint on May 16. |
Yahoo clearly has no concept of how these scammers operate if they think its as easy as going after Sanford Wallace. |

Yahoo's motivation to sue isn't because they care about people being scammed by scammers using their service. They only care when someone scams people while pretending to be Yahoo.

Since when is GoDaddy an email provider? My site is through them and the last I know, they didn't provide email to anyone except hosting account holders. |

So let's get this right. Yahoo! are suing unknown lottery scammers. The words 'wind', 'in' and 'pissing' spring to mind.
However, if Yahoo! start closing lotto lads accounts down Mr Gomer ain't gonna be a happy chappie!
Perhaps a Mod here could contact Yahoo! and explain exactly how widespread the 419 problem is. There again, the words 'in', 'pissing' and 'wind' spring to mind again.
Just as an aside shouldn't this thread be in 'Main' as it it is 419 related? |

Good luck Yahoo, but I'll be shocked if they even nail one person.
At least they are good about shutting down phone lad accounts. |

Why doesn't Yahoo start by looking at their own records |

^^ B/c they are the real victims here, don't you get it?!
A quick glance of their own records would show an endless supply of scammers using yahoo accounts to scam people & then some uber-dummy might suggest something completely off the wall like yahoo should stop/prevent/discourage scammers from using yahoo addys to scam people if they don't want their uh, good name dragged into these scams.
If they do it this way, it makes them looks something like heros while they are basically not doing jack sh!t to try to solve the problem, which might be mistakenly considered by some to be scammers scamming people, but the real problem is that they are using yahoo's name (as opposed to accounts which is not a big deal) to do the lottery scams.
Also, there is the side benefit of getting yahoo portrayed in the media like they are big & powerful in case they might need some bargaining chips should looming hostile takeover plots be on the horizon. |

Hmmm...a bit interesting. It appears they are also going after the phishing scams, now, too. Perhaps they are naive about how this will play out. Then again, perhaps not--given the scenario spelled out by thefife in her last paragraph there, maybe there is a very real strategy for this.
By the way I have zero issues with Yahoo domain abuse department, as they are quick on the ball about shutting down fraudulent domains. I wish the same can be said about hosts such as another one mentioned in this thread, GoDaddy, who routinely ignore abuse complaints, and are a haven for scammers.
Yahoo also does shut down scammer emails when they are reported as well; they are good about shutting down phone lad accounts for example, as OD mentioned previously.
I guess I'll take a wait and see approach with this...I don't want to burn any bridges I have with their domain abuse apartment as this is an open forum, and can be read by any and all. |
