I need help! We have a debate going at work on the correct and proper pronunciation of the surname Hayne. Our gentleman came to the United States in the 1870's from London and died a hero's death May 30, 1890. His full name is Al Hayne. So do you pronounce the surname as "hay-knee" or "hain"? Unfortunately there are no living descendents to contact and ask. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance..... |

It's pronounced 'hain' as in "Hey 'Wayne, that painting bloke is here again with his easel, get the horse and hay cart out"
One of the best ones is 'Featherstonehaugh'. Pronounced 'Fanshaw' The beauty of the English language, eh? |

I'd also pronounce it "Hain".
Tommo's right, we English are a wierd bunch when it comes to pronunciation. My favourite is "St John-Smythe", pronounced "Sinjin Smythe".
Or for anone who remembers the Monty Python sketch, there was Raymond Luxury Yaucht, who liked his name to be pronounced "Throat warbler Mangrove". |

But why is 'Worcestershire' pronounced 'woorster'? |
It's not.
Worcestershire is pronounced woostershire. The town of Worcester is pronounced wooster.
But the county name is usually abbreviated to wooster when referring to Worcestershire sauce. (which is I would guess what you are referring to).
Clear as mud eh?
Also - there is a college at both Oxford and Cambridge universities called Magdalen but which is pronounced maudlin.
Warwick pronounced Warrick, and of course Edinburgh pronounced Edinburra.
My favourite person name though is Urquhart - pronounced erkert. I used to work with a chap with that surname and listening to people mangle it was hilarious. He was the only person with his firstname in our office but whenever they used to ring and ask for him by firstname I sometimes used to say "which one" so that they would attempt the surname! I'm so bad.
And people think English is an easy language to learn!

The name Cockburn - as in - Cockburn's port wine - is pronounced Co-burn, the 'ck' is silent.
As I recall, their was a UK TV advert that played on the pronunciation quite a few years ago, usually shown at Christmas. |

Hain it is! Thanks for all the replies. Working in genealogy I get to have lots of fun with surnames. The one that just tickles me is Talifario which is pronounced Toliver.
Then there is the patron who phoned asking for information on Macoon County. I let the patron mispronounce it about 20 times before I said "Around here we pronounce it Maycan as in Macon County." |

I will say this only once. The Russian Moscock guy in the advert - Richard Marner - played Colonel Von Strohm in 'Allo 'Allo.
