Never thought I'd see the day, but someone close to me could have been out $500. My room mate is moving out as soon as he can find someone to take his spot, so he posts up the place on craig's list. He comes to us saying he had this weird contact on there that sent him a check but the amount was over what he had said rent was. The first warning bell in his head was that he hadn't agreed to letting the person live with us yet. The "new roomie" was a "model" from "Canada" and he had given her the address for her to check out the place when she was down here. As it turns out she wanted him to hold the place so she sent him a check $500 over the amount of the monthly rent. He thought it was funny as we have a strict roomie interview process, but he thought it was less funny when I showed him that he didn't get that email from Canada... he got it from Nigeria.

Not to close but close enough for personal comfort. I told him to tear the check up, tell the scammer that he decided to stay in the place, and cease all contact. Might have a go at this lad when the family stuff clears up (still got a messed up dad from the motorcycle accident to take care of). Anyway thought it was interesting.

Well, good that nobody was actually scammed. I always enjoy seeing a lad's plans foiled, especially when a would-be victim is educated in the process. Good stuff.

I do hope that your Dad recovers quickly, too.

Good on you .. my worst nightmare is seeing someone in my circle going down the drain while I'm baiting the crap out of these lads ... creating awareness in your circle and advising them to do the same in theirs will help .. spread the word around .. Thumbs up
