Strictly speaking this is phishing, but I'm posting it as it just goes to show how adaptable the lads are. My personal feeling is that, even though the English content is poor, this would fool a lot of people.
The lad has managed to come up with a convincing email address to send it from and there's even a plausible explanation of why this mail might have ended up in the receiver's Spam box.

It's not often I see a format and think "Wow!!! That's good." But this lad seems to know his game very well.

I sometimes wonder if we baiters only hurt the stupid ones that never make any money anyway, while the smart ones are the guys who really do the damage.

Anyone ever successfully baited a rather smart lad before?

Yes, I have baited many smart lads. The first set of quotes in my sig was from a very smart lad. I managed to keep him going for 4 months before he gave up. If he wasn't so damn greedy, he would have twigged long before he did.

@ Doodle Bug - I would venture to guess that the vast majority of victims do not get scammed because they are "greedy." In fact, many scams rely on a victim's sense of selfLESSness, and willingness to reach out and offer what they genuinely believe is help to someone else.

my friend said that you can't scam/bait an idiot. one needs to be smart/imaginative enough to believe that he/she is getting a good deal and convince oneself that it can work out. seems very true and i guess some more experienced baiters might be able to verify that.

a lad might seem to be stupid, but he's still smart/greedy enough to play along and believe that everything is working fine.

the above scams play on self interest why cant they purchase a puppy or adopt in there own country,

Well RF, as much fun as carving soap might be I actually enjoy baiting more than carving Laughing

The truth of the matter seems to be that there are as many types of victims as there are types of scammers. Some stupid some not. Some very educated some very naive. There was a recent IT article about a scam that targeted CEO types. While most of those people weren't stupid they were naive enough to believe in the Scam, whatever form it took.

For me the answer to this issue is very simple, very few of the victims are evil, or set out to do evil. However most of the scammers are evil. regardless of whether they reached that point through greed, poverty or desperation, the end result is still a person who sets out to be evil.

I work in IT so scamming, phishing, virus, spyware and plain fraud are very much a part of my day. I haven't noticed any correlation between intelligence and gullibility. As far as I can see, almost everyone will eventually fall for something. It just has to be something they want to believe in. So as part of my 'chores' at a hotel now I am instructing new clerks about scamming. I recently had to stop a new girl from accepting a typical overpayment scam.

As far as baiting goes I find a Scammer, the easiest person to Con. They are already pre-wired to believe in the victim. The belief that this New Fool will finally be The Fool to send them all of that money is what keeps them going long after common sense says time to quit.

How about charity scams? Look up noma on the forum and tell me how anyone that is willing to donate $1000 to pay for surgery to help repair the damage such a terrible disease has done to a small child's face could in any way be considered selfish/greedy or anything else. Scams come in many forms. Some prey on the greed of individuals, but some could only work on honest, trusting people who just want to help others.

What about job check scams? OK, I guess technically it is self-interest that would make someone desperate for a job, but self-interest isn't ALWAYS a bad thing that should give other's license to steal.

What about overpayment scams where people think they are doing a favor by sending money back that was "accidentally" overpaid? Or they think they are sending money to a legitimate shipping company with a website and everything? Do these people deserve to get scammed for their self-interested do-gooding?

Even next of kin scams can be highly targeted with lads researching family names and obituaries to find their victims. Maybe it's greed or self-interest that would drive someone to claim what they believe is a legitimate inheritance, but there's nothing wrong with that. Is there?

Don't even get me started on charity and love scams.

Of course some victims are driven by greed, but like so much in life, it just isn't that simple.

Doodlebug, you do realize that the victims think they *are* paying taxes for the inheritance or lotto winnings or whatever, right? That's part of the scam. In regards to the original post, there have been several types of scams already exposed in relation to the U.S. economic stupidity plan:

then states that he needs the target’s bank account information for the direct deposit of the
rebate. If the target refuses, he is told that he cannot receive the rebate.

Refund e-mail
The IRS has seen several variations of a refund-related bogus e-mail which falsely claims to
come from the IRS, tells the recipient that he or she is eligible for a tax refund for a specific
amount, and instructs the recipient to click on a link in the e-mail to access a refund claim form.
The form asks the recipient to enter personal information that the scamsters can then use to
access the e-mail recipient’s bank or credit card account.

Audit e-mail
Using a technique calculated to get almost anyone’s attention, the e-mail notifies the recipient
that his or her tax return will be audited. This is the first scam of which the IRS is aware that uses
this to get the victim to respond. This e-mail is a phony. The IRS does not send unsolicited, taxaccount
related e-mails to taxpayers.

Changes to Tax Law e-Mail
This bogus e-mail is addressed to businesses, accountants and “Treasury” managers. It instructs
them to download information on tax law changes by clicking on a series of links to publications
on businesses, estate taxes, excise taxes, exempt organizations and IRAs and other retirement
plans.

Paper Check Phone Call
In a current telephone scam, a caller claims to be an IRS employee who is calling because the
IRS sent a check to the individual being called. The caller states that because the check has not
been cashed, the IRS wants to verify the individual’s bank account number. The caller may have
a foreign accent.

What to Do
Those who have received a questionable e-mail claiming to come from the IRS may forward it to
a mailbox the IRS has established to receive such e-mails, [email protected], using instructions
contained in an article titled “How to Protect Yourself from Suspicious E-Mails or Phishing
Schemes.” Following the instructions will help the IRS track the suspicious e-mail to its origins
and shut down the scam.

Those who have received a questionable telephone call that claims to come from the IRS may
also use the [email protected] mailbox to notify the IRS of the scam.

I've had them drop me for no reason. I was baiting straight, no silly stuff.
Not that I care, if they drop the real replies from victims, that is OK by me. I just reach into my bucket of worms and rebait.

I just got this from a ASEM I sent about 1 hr ago.

I am rebaiting him (straight) from a live.com addy.

I dont expect much from this ASEM, I just want to catch a few of the really greedy ones.

I wonder if they view gmail with special suspicion, since it seems many people baiting use it.

@ doodlebug-greed is likely a factor sometimes,but not always.I am neither stupid nor naive.I understand what the underbelly of society is.Yet at one time ,I almost got desperate enough to answer one.I figured what the hell do I have to loose?And if it ever came down to it,no I would never have sent one single penny.But suppose I were elderly,or unsophisticated,or maybe came from a country where this was unheard of?Sure greed is a factor many times,but you cannot discount a lot of other things.The lads may be many things,but stupid for the most part is not among them.They have a variety of scams,because one does not fit every body.
