So a scammer is telling you they can have you arrested? Heh.

No, they can't, if that was something that was worrying you.

When I had a landline I ignored all such calls that did not come from a known ID that I was familiar with, or came up as "unknown caller."

Is it feasible for you to screen calls?

Generally, the best advice here is to just ignore them. You have seemingly unwittingly given your details to a scammer, don't worry, it happens. He is now hassling you as he thinks there is money in the pipeline.
Ignore him for long enough and he will see that he is wasting his time and resources and move on. Don't enter into any sort of conversation with him from now on.

Can I ask, have you given this person any other personal information such as bank details or credit card details? If so, there are other steps you need to put in place.

How on earth did they get your real name and address? Was it a bait that went wrong?

Either way, my advice stands... just ignore him and he will move on. Scammers like to threaten people with arrest, the whole irony of it sometimes gives me a wicked little smile. They are as likely to contact the Police as I am of contacting my local russian roulette club.

If your bank is on fraud alert, it would suggest to me that your scammer also has your details and has been attempting to use them. It's worth speaking to the bank and telling them that you have somehow been targetted by scammers. See what they say.

It's not possible for someone to completely guess your names, address and bank account details, so, somewhere along the line, you must have either given those details to this scammer or another scammer, perhaps you accidentally input some of your details on a phishing page, or you shop online at a site that does not have secure facilities which have been hacked, and now the scammer has your details, but needs further details to abuse your bank account.

And bank accounts as well?

As SP says, something's gone awry here.. there's no way a bank puts you on fraud alert if your account hasn't been compromised.

Webster, think back. You had to have given your bank account info somehow. Did you receive an email from your bank saying they need to update your account information that you replied to? Did you give it to someone that called to sell you something?

Webster: you might also consider the possibility that somebody else gave out the information. Spouse? Parent? Somebody else who knows your bank-account information could have been tricked into giving it out by a telephone call or a phishing e-mail.

That is probably how they got your banking info. A site that is not secure (https://www.nameofsite.com) could be a phishing trap. It might not be a bad idea to close that account and open a new one.

It would also be a good idea to regularly monitor your credit to watch for irregularities or purchases/credit applications that you haven't made or applied for.

The threats are meaningless and are designed to intimidate.

Strangely, the guy that runs lifelock, was arrested for identity fraud himself (as a teenager)

You have the right to notify all credit reporting agencies, of this attempt, yourself for free..

They will put an alert on your account..

Bad idea, sorry Mad. Several years back, a scammer showed up at a baiters place of employment asking for the baiters baiting persona. If a scammer has your real details, drop him like a rock.

~ Mugatu,

If you have a real phone number (USA), you can get the rest of the information from http://anywho.com

Have your bank change the credit card number immediately.

When they call, pretend to be old, stupid and confused. Talk slowly. More slowly than you think possible. Respond to any question with an increasingly irrelevant, and always incomplete answer.

When they ask for (insert your name here) pretend to ask somebody in the room "is (first name) coming home from the hospital soon"?

Say "huh?" and "what's that?"a lot. Pretend to "hear" a word slightly different from one they used, and address that. Example: hear "colon" for "color", "massage" for "message" etc.

Right in the middle of something, scream at an imaginary cat about scratching the f*cking furniture, or yell (to no one in particular) "I told that damn cat to stay the hell off my walker!". Remember, SLOWLY.

Of course, pretending to be old, stupid, deaf, and confused comes a lot easier to some of us than others.
Embarassed

If you have a business or for some other reason don't want to answer the phone with "hello? hello? is somebody there?", can you get someone else with a "normal" affect to answer the phone? Can you answer the phone without saying anything? When they start ranting, just put the phone down gently and go away for 5 minutes.

Do not engage with these bastards!

Use an answering machine. You might eventually have to change your phone number, but they'll probably go away soon if you don't actually have a conversation with them.

It's show business, man. Develop your skills. Find a record or tape of Mel Brooks' 2000 year old man or watch The Simpsons and practice an old Jewish man (preferably Russian) accent. It'll open up a whole new world for you. This is emmis.

Learn four Yiddish words and throw them in randomly in the middle of a sentence. SLOWLY. It doesn't matter what the words mean.

Let me know if you need lessons.

Oy vey, such tsuris you got!

call your bank and straighten things out with them. Don't answer any calls apparently from your bank, but call them back on their advertised number.

Check any accounts you have for funny activity, including PayPal, Ebay etc.

My thoughts are that they need more information, or you'd have lost money by now. If you feel you are being threatened then get the police involved immediately. Don't do anything to annoy them.

A female with whom I recently ended a relationship tried to blackmail me. She said that unless I sent her £500 she would tell the Receiver of Revenue that I had offshore bank accounts (which I do, perfectly legally and declared as required by law, but she assumed that it was illegal.)

I emailed her back and told her that blackmail is a serious criminal offence and that I had accordingly forwarded her email to the police with full message headers through which she could be traced. She got a huge fright (of course I hadn't done it - I wouldn't waste police time) and I've heard nothing further from her.

I would do the same in this situation, call their bluff.
