Sometime last year, bombardier started a "quit smoking" thread that I tried to play along with. I was doing pretty good for a short time, then just went back to smoking like nothing ever happened.
Since that time, I have been wanting to quit, but I guess just not wanting it bad enough to actually do it. Until last Monday that is. Monday April 21st at 8:15 am was the last cigarette I smoked. I think the only thing stopping me was the fact that I thought it would be impossible to quit. I used this disgusting things smoking does link to get some info on the damage I was doing to myself. After printing it off, taking it home and reading it, I was ready.
OK, here's what I want to know. Did anyone that quit during Bomb's thread quit for good? Are you still not smoking? And........does anyone else feel like quitting? Since I have gone a full week now, I feel like I stand a pretty good chance of doing it for good. |

Harry, I think I might try to join you on this one.
I'm trying to quit for some time already but never managed to really do it. I have reduced it for a while, but then went back up again. Not as high as before, but still more than I did for a while. |

Good luck to you all on giving up
My hubby gave up smoking about a year ago,
At first he used the nicorette inhalators, so he had sonething in his hands when getting the nicotine hit
then he moved on to lozenges
The house is beautifully smoke free now |

Good luck to you both. I know how hard it is, and I wish you well, but don't beat yourselves up if it doesn't work this time, cos that will make it harder next time you try. It's a process that could take more than one or two tries.
I last smoked 20 months ago. This is my third and most successful go at not smoking, and I think there are several things that have contributed to it working. This time I have told myself I am not giving up for good, I am just putting smoking on hold until I am 70; I don't like the idea of never being able to have a cigarette, but somehow I can cope with having to wait a very long time for my next one. Also I had Zyban prescribed for me by my GP, and I used a nicotine inhaler for the first 2 months, then carried it with me like a security blanket for the next 3 months, barely using it at all. I'd heartily recommend the inhaler; it gives you something to do with your hands, and it also fills the gap when you have been used to having something to suck on. No sniggering at the back, thank you.
PM me if you want moral support at any time, and good luck. |

I used Zyban as well, worked like a charm. The only side effect were some very odd and NSFW dreams. |

YAY HB & Rootuser!!!!
I quit smoking almost 2 months ago. I just decided today was the day & I stopped. I had been wanting to quit for a while but also didn't think it was possible. But it is! The longer you go w/o one, the more you are invested in stopping for good. I still get urges to smoke...esp. when I'm driving and the other motorists refuse to drive as fast as me, which frustrates me to no end, but i just take a deep breath, blast my music, & start analyzing where i can weave thru traffic to get 3 cars ahead to where there is a 30 car space between that car & the one in front of it & by then I've forgotten all about that I wanted a cigarette. |

The timing as to Eight's quitting and her finally acknowledging her secret crush on yours truly is totally coincidental, I assure you.
Good luck Harry et al (some latin for Eight).... |

I've been using the nicotine gum. Last week I was chewing 1 piece per hour. This week I decided that 1 piece every 2-3 hrs was worth a try, and it seems to be working out pretty well. The real difference this attempt is that I really want to quit. I know a week does not seem like a lot to most people, but for me a week is like an eternity to not have had a cigarette. I have smoked for at least 35 years.
I really don't know if the gum is helping or not, but I will keep using it for another few weeks at least. The things that make it all seem worthwhile are happening already. My senses of smell and taste are improving already. My nose doesn't stay plugged up all the time anymore. If this can happen after only 1 week, I can only imagine what I will feel like in a few more weeks. Most importantly, beer tastes better! Who would have thought beer could taste better than it already did?
Even more disturbing than how "easy" this seems to be going is the fact that I have even been having thoughts of getting out the ol' bicycle and starting to ride again no.....screw that..........first cigs, then the weight.......
EDIT to add: I will probably gain some weight, but I doubt my ass will ever be as big as jojo's. |

Stick with it guys, it has almost been a year since that thread and i never smoked a single ciggy since i started it, tell everyone you know that you have quit, you will get the "Yeah whatever" lot giving it large but they're the ones you need to make you quit, the last thing you want is for them to say "i told ya so".
Some states from giving up almost a year ago,
Time not smoked: 11 months 2 weeks and 6 days
Cigs not smoked: 14,251
Money saved: 2,495 Euro or 3,901 US Dollars or 1,960 Quid
Good luck all who join Harry and Rootuser and remember if i can do it anyone can |

Way to go guy/gals... as a former non smoker I would love to stop again. I had quit for over four years but when my wife and I got together It was hard to stay stopped, everyone around me were chain smokers, it started with a ocasional cigar and progressed from there but at least I have kept myself to less than a pack a day... the 20 years before that it was 2-3 packs aday. but I was also drinking back then. |

Humm... I've been smoking for some 11 years now. Had some quitting tentatives, but never lasted long. Biggest break was 3 or 4 months.
But then again, I'm an oddball smoker. I have some (very rare) days when I smoke 30-40 cigarettes, I have some (quite often) days when I don't smoke at all or just 1-2-3, and (regular) days when I smoke 10-15 cigarettes (2 20-packs in 3 days). |

Harry, keep it up.
I quit in November 2006. I rarely get the urge for one now and I even had one about a month ago. Couldn't even finish it. Tasted terrible and I threw it out half smoked. I still dip a little copenhagen now and then but not much.
It's hard, but it's well worth the effort. |

I applaud anyone that quits smoking. I quit 19 years ago but I wasn't a heavy smoker, and smoked for 17 years. It was more of a peer pressure, cool thing to do type of smoking. I had been leaving my cigarettes at home when I would leave the house, and I just got to where I didn't want them. One day I laid them down and have never touched them since. I have never had any cravings, and have never wanted a cigarette. |

Hats off to all who have given it up
In 1985 I quit on a WAGER, and stayed smoke-free for about 5 years....I blame an extended stay from an unwanted house guest sending me running back to the habit
I suppose I need another good wager to give it up again
Best of luck. |

I've found that eating lollipops controls my nicotine cravings really really well... especially the non-normal flavored ones, such as cherry cheesecake and berry lemonade, etc.... |

After having smoked for about 30 years (35 fags a day in the end.. ), I decided to quit.
Tried cold turkey and lasted about 5 hours. Tried nicotinepatches and lasted about 12 hours. Then gave up.....resigned to the fact that quitting just wasn't for me....
Then a mate at work stopped with Champix....
Smoked my last cigarette at 11pm on 3 February.... haven't had one since (except the few I had in my dreams )... no anxiety, no stress, no craving, ...no problem....
The only side effects were slight nausea for about half an hour after taking each pill, and incredibly credible weird dreams... am a bit sad that that last side effect disappeared after about two weeks....
Stopped taking the pills 3 weeks ago because I found I forgot to take them fairly regularly without an increase in craving....
Result ? Gained about 5 kilo (but weighing only 60 kilo to begin with that's ok), no more coughing my lungs out each morning, no more phlegm-clogged throat, and saved over 600 Euro (470 or USD$930)...
Would recommend it to anyone..... |
