With the discussion on ethics, I'm going to take the rules of spam

and adopt them to scambaiting.

Rule#0: Scamming is theft.
Commentary: Scammers believe it is their right to steal from anyone on the internet.

Rule#1: Lads lie.
Admonition: Always assume that there is a measurable chance that the entity you are dealing with is a lad.
Contradiction: Lads will redefine any term in order to disguise their scamming.
Corollary: Lads attempt to re-define "scamming" as that which they do not do.

Rule #2: If a lad seems to be telling the truth, see Rule #1.
Corollary: A lad when caught, blames his victims.

Rule#3: Lads are greedy.
Corollary: Lads' greediness can make them do things that are stupid.
Corollary: Never underestimate the greediness of lads.
Corollary: Lads assume everybody is more stupid than themselves.
Lads Standard of discource: Threats and intimidation trump facts and logic.

Rule #4: The natural course of a lad's business is to get baited.

Rule #5: Lads will screw over anyone, no matter what the victim's situation is, to scam money from them.

I think this is a dangerous oversimplification (and I realize that you are being whimsical). Some of these guys are baiting in languages other than their native tongue and are smart enough to understand human nature and manipulate their victims (even highly educated victims) to get them to send money.

Some lads are stupid. Some are unsophisticated. Some are very smart indeed. A bit like any general population.

I always start by assuming that the lad is smarter than he appears, not dumber - just in case Wink

So are we saying that because a lad does something that it's ok for us to do it back to them? Rules for how scammers behave is one thing but the ethics of scambaiting is a totally different subject. I think it would be a good idea not to confuse the two.

Rules for how scammers behave is the topic of this thread. The ethics of scambaiting is not. The latter been very recently the subject of another thread, has also been frequently in the past and no doubt will be again. But not in this thread, please.

With my serious head on, I agree with ON7 in that I believe it's an all too common mistake to assume lad stupidity. Many of them are good at what they do, in a foreign language to boot. If you need to generalise, I'd say greed is a more common trait than stupidity in lads.

But silly head on, (and I do believe that Bobcat was aiming for light relief) then yes that made me smile. Wink

It comes up in the first ten if you do a search for "ethics", it is so recent that it is still on the front page of the Main Scambaiting forum, and it is now locked. All reasons why I did not link it in my earlier post.

Oh come on, I just did a search for "ethics" and found 2 locked threads just from today. On those threads, Sheboppe took the time to link to several much older ones. Those searches took me about 30 seconds.

Rule #5 is a bit weak.

I think it should read.
