Dear Laert3s Collins
Thank you for your very edifying reply to my mail in which you expressed willingness to assist and participate in this transaction. I will hereunder forward such details as you require in order for us to make progress in this transaction which I will break into four stages viz
(1) Filling and submitting a letter of claim to enable us start securing all the legal documents to authenticate this transaction.
(2) Obtaining requisite approvals to facilitate a legal/legitimate transfer of these funds into your nominated account
(3) The actual transfer and acknowledgement of receipt of the fund in your account.
(4) The aftermath i.e. sharing, disbursing the said funds and possible application thereof in such a way that we may be able by utilizing business acumen to actually reinvest same in other financially viable transactions or lucrative investments and also manage it in such a way as to create more wealth for our selves and for our generation to come.
First stage commences by your filling and forwarding an application to our Department requesting as bonifide beneficiary that these funds be release to you being yours by virtue of Consultancy Fee (I have attached a text specimen i.e. LETTER OF CLAIM of this which you will transcribe on your letter headed paper and send back to me by attachment or fax.). The second been the INDEMNITY FORM, you will also fill and send directly via attachment to the Departments accredited attorney. If for any reason you do not have a company, then you can draft the form on a plain sheet and submit to me. The Ministry will then request your physical presence of verification purposes and also to endorse fund release document. You will forward all necessary requirements so that I can document them as the genuine accredited consultant for the committee in case of confirmation. We however think that for obvious reasons and for time factor you should not come personally rather you will deal directly with the Department accredited Attorney who will act on your behalf for this things.
It is the lawyer who would obtain all necessary transfer approvals and act as a go between the Departments for you. To prove your identity you will give the lawyer copies (photo page) of your international passport or driver license, obviously a lawyer would charge for his legal services and any other cost. We have already earmarked 5% of the funds to stand as expenses fund. Whatever you and I will spend now in the course of executing this deal would firstly be deductible from this fund upon your receipt of the fund in your account before applying our agreed percentage towards sharing. I stress this point at this early stage in order to give you opportunity to proceed or not, as i believe strictly in the principles of UBERIMAE FIDEL-utmost good faith in absolute revelations about whatever is involved in any business transaction. On our part here we have spent monies on pushing the deal to its present position.
We therefore urge that you handle the lawyer expenses and get reimbursed later. Part of the reasons why you will need to pay the Attorney is to bolster his belief that there exist an actual beneficiary leaving abroad who is actually processing the funds payment and remittance from his/her country. We are civil servant and are therefore not particularly rich, we need your help and cooperation in everything for mutual benefit, it must be a perfect symbolises. In order to bolster your trust, I will forward to you copies of my photos and that of my beloved family in my next email for transparency and sincerity sake.
Please look at this demand, and consider it a necessary investment for we cannot make omelets without breaking eggs. Kindly retain utmost confidentiality as I await your action.
Feel free to call me for further enquiries.
Best Regards
Peter Mb3ki (Mr.)

Dear Mr Peter Mb3ki,
Thank you for your detailed email.
Unfortunately my computer cannot open the file LETTER OF CLAIM.doc. I spoke with my secretary, she said that you must resend it in Rich Text Format (RTF) in order for me to open and complete the form.
I will complete the INDEMNITY FORM and return it upon your next email.
Thank you for your understanding,

It's never too early to start delaying. This forces him to reformat the file and to resend it. RTF tend to be larger, taking up more of his time and costing him money if he pays for data usage.
Peter Mb3ki to Laert3s Collins wrote: |
Dear Laert3s Collins
I have attached the LETTER OF CLAIM again with the Rich Text Format, please fax it to my desk on +27866378515. After filling the INDEMNITY FORM you can Fax it directly to the Departments Accredited Attorney Barrister Peter Hans-Joachin Wagner's desk on +27866449048. I await your immediate action. Please call me once you have done this.

Peter,
I must apologize to you. I've been away on unexpected Church business for the past couple of days. I am up late (it's 3 in the morning) catching up on reports and emails from our missions around the world, which is my job. Our church has a mission in Maiduguri, in northeastern Nigeria. It would be very helpful to have a local contact as a registered charitable partner to help distribute our charitable aid to that mission, or perhaps to open a new mission in your location - would you be potentially interested in that?
Now on to business. I spoke to the Head Deacon of the church again, and he has tentatively approved our wire transfer of the necessary fees to you. However, he says that he really must see a receipt or invoice proving that the money is there so that we may send the fees - you know, he's a bit of an old person, and he doesn't know how we do business these days - he doesn't believe in doing business over the Internet, as he's a strong believer in face-to-face contacts, but I've told him that you are an honest fellow and will be able to advance our Church missions in your country. You will be able to, right?

A mistake here on my part - he's actually in South Africa, not Nigeria. I guess Laertes is an ignorant American and thinks all countries in Africa are the same? Regardless, he ignores the email.

Mr Mbeki,
My sent email shows that I attached the forms as I said in my email. However, since you did not receive it, I have contacted my email provider's support department indicating a problem and asking if they may resolve it.
As I told you the Church fax machine is incapable of sending international faxes, we did, however, get our scanner working over the weekend (blessed be the Four Most Holy Saints) and once my email provider resolves the issue with attachments I may send you the documents you have requested.
I do have a question about the transaction, though. What taxes must be paid on the funds at each end of the transaction? Do you have any idea?
Also, what is a barrister? Here in America we have baristas, who are people who serve coffee. Is it like that?
Yours,
Laertes |
I was legitimately having trouble sending attachments. Also, another newbie mistake here - he never mentioned a barrister. Fortunately, he never even read the email. Bigstring is a great email service, you can see if your email's been read, and if it has, from which IP addresses. Peter goes ahead and sends me several new emails.

Dear Laert3s Collins
I have been experiencing issues of sending mails to people who don€™t receive it as well, but that is not enough reason to sit back and relax when we don€™t have much time left in this claim.
If this claim seems important to you, then I advice you print out those documents and fax them to me immediately from any other place rather than your office. There is no time to wait until weekend to be able to work on your scanner. We do not have time for that. The maturity of the US$21.5Million fixed deposit for the period of 6 months has long elapsed on the 29th of November and we must conclude with all documentation and paper work here in South Africa before Saturday the 15th of December.
Therefore print out those documents and fax them to me immediately. As regards your question about tax payment, 5% of the entire deposit has already been marked out to cover such expenses therefore by working together, tax payment should not be an issue to deliberate over. I don€™t know the precise figure right now, we can only find out when the approvals have been granted. My department will be taking care of that. I have discussed with my colleagues and we came to a conclusion that opening of an online account with the paying bank will avoid further tax payment in your country.
Thus, you must consult the attorney immediately so that he can start work today because this is the most important thing now. Every other thing can only take effect after you have consulted our department€™s accredited attorney and faxed those documents. The earlier you start up the better for all of us because the attorney must get certain approvals from the ministry of finance, the Johannesburg High Court and even Corporate Affairs Commission which will consume time as well. Therefore if this transaction seems important to you and your organization, then you are advised to call for any further enquiries or clarification while we expect your fax today. Ensure you consult the attorney today with his details provided below and fax the INDEMNITY FORM to him while I await the Letter of Claim on my own fax.

Dear Laert3s Collins
How was your weekend. Sorry for my late response, I received your email this morning and have been searching through all the files in my office for the receipt of my payment which i made on behalf of our Department to the sum of US$21,500,000 (equivalent in south african Rands) for further credit to the paying bank, Bronx Finance.
Attached is the receipt of payment which i made earlier in the year and also a deposit certificate of the funds which the paying bank issued. This is the banks website (www.onlinebronx.com) for further confirmation of the deposit. The maturity of the funds in the account is already due as at 29th of November 2007 and that is the reason why you need to act immediately to enable our Department instruct the paying bank to remit the funds to you officially.
You are also required to send the LETTER OF CLAIM and INDEMITY FORM which i demanded of you immediately via fax or email attchment so that the attorney can start up your paper work and get the funds released to you as planned. The attorneys professional fees is $2,617 which you will be required to send according to his direction for the procurement of the required documents in your favour via money gram immediately . Contact him immediately via email for further details on how you can pay for his services, his detail is as follows

I will contact your lawyer immediately, but first I must ask of you - how do you know the lawyer? Can we trust him not to take any money for himself?

And that's it for Chapter the First. I'll get the attachments up as soon as I can download, fakey-ize, and upload them all. Don't worry, there are several more chapters to come - the bait is still ongoing today, albeit it may be dying. |

I received your email but i don't quite appreciate the manner in which you addressed the attorney. Your comments sound very insulting to the attorney, i must tell you that i don't like it. The ID copy you sent to me was not visible also. All i see is "cant determine type of file" the reason is because it has a "bad format", therefore be sure that the problem is from the way it was scanned because we both cant access it from here. Do you understand. The file is a JPG file but still would not open. You are advised to find any other fax machine rather than yours and send both your ID and the Form immediately.
The informations you provided initially can enable the attorney to start up work, but he only needs your ID and a copy of the indemnity form for documentation purpose. Has he been paid for the logistics? I want you to understand that time is of essence in this transaction.

Peter gets all worked up about the "insults" to the attorney and about the ID files.
Laert3s Collins to Hans-J0achim Wagner wrote: |
Hans,
Indeed, let's get started with registering you as a registered partner of the Church.
First however you must decide which classification you'll take - Formal Business Partner or Formal Charitable Partner. As this is a one-time transaction it does not matter too much, but I am required to ask you.
A Formal Business Partner may receive funds in exchange for real goods bought by the church. Real goods must be actual items, in this case I would have you fax a certificate or something of that nature.
A Formal Charitable Partner will receive funds monthly to conduct their registered charitable activities in their own country. The Church has allocated US$128,500 per month to your country as part of charitable and outreach programs, of which $77,000 has been claimed. If you are willing to manage a charitable activity in your country on our behalf I will see how much you will be eligible, probably around $10,000 per month increasing to $26,000 per month at some point later. If not I can simply register you to receive a one time payment equal to your fees.
Either way we will start with the Personal Identity Form which I will fill out on your behalf, please reply with this information as soon as possible so that I may conclude the official registration and can transfer your fees to you so that we can continue with the transaction.

I just tried to fax you my passport via your fax number as listed below and the machine said "number unrecognized", please do give me a valid fax number, please, you have to trust me here, we really need this money to carry out our missionary and charitable activities.

I am not stupid! I know how to send international faxes. I tried both of the numbers provided, one said "number unrecognized" (your former one) and one kept ringing without picking up (the new one). Please fix the issues on your end before saying that it is my fault.

Ok, try using this efax number +14197356320. Let me know your outcome. |
He's still pressing the fax issue...

I have tried calling the number you gave me +12063331083 several times but it keeps on getting into voice mail. Why? I need you to understand the urgency of this transaction. The earlier we start securing all neccessary documentation the better for us.

What is your progress now with the attorney, has he started securing the documents for our $21,500,000 transfer? I need your immediate response.

Dear Laert3s Collins
I have tried calling you several times today but the number you provided still goes into voice mail. I dropped a voice mail as well, but i would require you call me back as soon as possible because i don't like the rate at which this transaction is moving. We are not going to achieve anything at this rate, that is why i have demanded for a valid number you can be reached with at ease without getting into voice mail.
Have you sent your IDENTIFICATION and the INDEMNITY FORM with the last e fax number i provided? Have you mobilized the attorney? We have a time frame we must beat. I advice you call me back immediately you read this mail since you have my number. |

How is your weekend? I need to know if you have paid the attorney for his services, because without that we will never have success in this transaction, please let me know when you intend to do that as this is the only hindrance to our success.

Peter,
I must tell you that I am not pleased with the attorney that you have chosen, he takes a long time to return my messages and does not include information that I have specifically asked him to forward, in fact I get the sense that he is deliberately delaying us for his own purposes. Would you please go about finding another attorney or ensuring that this one is motivated and mobilized to ensure our success in this transaction?
A very merry Christmas to you and your familiy.
Laertes |
Complaining about the attorney always helps too... especially when all the characters are clearly the same person and that person wants to stick up for his pride.

Happy Christmas Collins
Compliments of the season, i was right at sleep when you woke me with your call. How are you? I have tried both numbers you gave to no avail. Since i am awake now, I will appreciate if you try calling me again.
Best Regards |
At this point I rang him at around 4AM his time... on Christmas Day. He was quite definitely NOT happy about this. Hey, I was just trying to spread a little bit of holiday cheer! I used the "poor connection" modality - act like I can't hear him (I could hear him fine) and then hang up. Believe it or not, even calling and repeating the lad's name five or six times then hanging up reassures them that you are an authentic, enthusiastic victim.

Dear Laert3s Collins
It is quite unfortunate that i can't reach you on the two different phone numbers you provided me, this is the only delay in this transaction. We need perfect communication. I just received your call this morning, you actually woke me up from sleep. It was 6.44am when u called here in South Africa. I read your email just now and i must tell you that the attorney is a very busy and serious minded man. He does not play with his duties. I confronted him yesterday and he told me that he has not received any payment from you. He informed me that he has sent you the payment procedure long ago, infact on two different occasions. Please let us get this transaction going, you are requested to make the payment via MONEY GRAM money transfer. Please send the money to the accountants name as provided. This is the receivers information as informed by the attorney yesterday.
Receivers Name: FRANK ASIEDU (MR.)
City: Johannesburg
Country: South Africa
Please proceed immediately with this payment, you can go to any money gram office closer to you this morning and make the payment in person. Using the moneygram agent locations on (www.moneygram.com) i was able to find out agents closer to your address. Please proceed to any of these places and make the payment this morning. Call me once you have sent the money, so we can proceed without any further delay. |
He also attached a list of MG locations close to my supposed location. Regardless, he doesn't seem to have much holiday cheer. It must be tough still being a poor mugu on Christmas Day!

He wants his money. But how is a clergyman supposed to send money through MG on Christmas Day?
Laert3s Collins to Hans-J0achim Wagner wrote: |
Hans,
A most felicitous Christmas to you. I just finished with the morning and evening services and have a short break before administering the night candlelight service. Tell me, are you a religious man? What have you done to celebrate the birth of Our Most Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
As far as the payment for your services, know that it is Christmas today and so all places are closed in observance of this solemn and joyful holiday, but I shall endeavor to transfer the fee to you tomorrow so that we can continue along with this transaction.

God has already blessed us with this transaction and we have to take it seriously, because heaven helps only those who help them selves. I await your call. |

Compliments of the season
What is your situation report? Have you paid the attorney? We the executives have gone a long way to register you in our department on the list of contractors who's mobilization fee of $21.5Million are next to be paid for the last quarter of the year. Has the attorney finished your paper work? If your paper work is ready, then the department will be able to pay you by Friday the 28th December. Let me know if you have paid the attorney and if he has secured all documentation to your favor since you have refused to call back or provide a valid number you can be reached with.
You have to take this transaction very serious, and do what so ever it takes to make sure the money is transferred to your name before the end of this week or at least have your transfer approved. The department will be making the last payment for the year to all contractors who executed various assignments/contracts this year from Friday the 28th of December to Monday the 31st. I want our funds release to be approved within this period. I really don't know why you are delaying in this regards. I have spoken with the attorney on the phone right now and he still has not received any payment from you. I don't like the idea of calling this man every now and then; he will have the impression that I have a special interest in this transaction. This transaction has been properly arranged for its success, you are the only person that is pulling it backwards. You must have to pay this attorney today so that we can get all the paper work from him; he is the only person that can secure the paper work for us. We have a time frame and we are fast running out of it. I advice you pay him off today and call me immediately you have done that. Save this transaction today, I beg you in the name of God. Everything is in your care; we can€™t afford to loose all we have worked for since this year just because of your delay.
Regards |

Dear Laert3s Collins
I really don€™t understand why you are delaying in this transaction. I understand that this is a festive period, at least right now the 25th and 26th is gone. How could I get such a great deal that will be beneficial to all parties involved in this transaction including your church, yet you are not following it up appropriately. You would have simply and honestly informed me that you can€™t handle this right from the beginning so that I know what to do from the start.
We are running out of time and i want you to understand that. We need your paper work to be approved within the time frame we have left, please proceed and pay the attorney unfailingly this morning. The money gram transfer does not take up to 10minutes. I have given you all the information you need, including the receivers information, the Money Gram agent location where you can make the payment and even the opening and closing time. Please call me once you have paid the money unfailingly today. We have little or no time left, leave whatever you are doing and proceed immediately with saving our $21.5Million transaction. You have nothing to loose.
Regards

At this point I let him stew for a couple of days, and you can tell that he thought his payday was just around the corner. I love seeing the lad equivalent of someone banging his head against a wall...
At this point I think I'll conclude this chapter, due to a small problem with my email. There will be one more short chapter of Laert3s Collins vs. the lad, and then we move on meet the rest of the characters that have not been referenced yet. |
