What did my computer just do?

It locked up - I couldn't get firefox to work - but could get the other programs. Then all of a sudden everything froze.

I couldn't turn it off so I hit the power button and held it down.

computer goes off. I wait a few minutes and turn it on

Then I get this blue screen that says something like:

check files system on C
Type of file NTFS volume dirty

CHDSK is verifying files (Stage 1 of 3)

CHDSK is verifying indexes (Stage 2 of 3)

Delete SQ73E6~1 in index $I30 of file 7943
Delete SQF902~1 in index $I30 of file 7943

sqlitc_zuQPoM1EZsg8uhn in index of $I30 of file 7943

And so on - I couldn't write it all down as it was going - and a lot more come on the screen and then it all flashed away.

My computer never does this. WTF was that?

Dunno-mine went screwy too. Firefox froze-i just killed the tab re-opened it and it was ok-ran spyware blaster and that's cool.

I had a laptop (refurbished) with Windows XP that did that FREQUENTLY. Eventually, one day, it just never came back on ... Confused

There were files open on the system when you forced the shutdown. Whenever that happens, because it was not shut down cleanly, XP and Vista forces a file check on the drive.

What you saw it doing was correcting the NTFS file system. Generally nothing too terrible to worry about, but it sounds like you have have had some type of hardware error.

Did you get the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" blah blah blah once it came back up?

No it didn't say it recovered from a serious error - just opened like normal.

That was just so odd!

Computers will crash for no apparent reason, what you saw on restart is the normal recovery program, have had it happen to me quite often.

Best to do a Disk Cleanup and run Defrag.

As I am currently in a basement swapping out the HD's on a server and then later some workstations I think I can help out a little here.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer

In windows explorer RT click on Local Disk C: and select Properties. In the properties menu select the tools tab.

In the top menu, Error Checking click the "check now" button then check both the automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors boxes.

The next time you reboot the computer it will go through a checkdisk scan.

I am swapping out the hard drives here because the drives had errors. Usually hard drives get replaced after the first error. I run Acronis True Image so swapping out drives is actually a very simple process.

Exactly what Stoker just said. You have either got corrupt software, or a hard drive starting to fail. Make sure you back up all valuable data to a CD(s) ASAP. Failure may not occur for months, and it could happen anytime.

I had a really wierd computer issue last week...the 'y' and 'z' were switched. No, not the keys on the keyboard, when I hit the 'y' button it typed a 'z' on the screen and vice versa. I've never seen anything like that...fortunately, a reboot fixed the issue. Sometimes all it takes is a reboot.

^^ CA, are you sure it wasn't the Z and the W (and the Q and the A) that were switched?

[EDIT] Oh I get it, below tiny quote should say 'bloody German keyboards' in this case. You probably hit Shift-Alt by accident.

To get rid of this problem, go to the language options and remove the German keyboard layout, or change it to US for all languages.

(bloody French keyboards)

^^^ Oooo, that could have been it, but no it was the Y and Z that were reversed, and I didn't notice any other keys doing that. I was typing a short sentence that ended in Y and I got a Z instead. I was confused so I deleted it and tried again not believing what I was seeing. Being stupid(or so I thought) I hit the Z and got my Y to finish typing. Was quite amusing actually. Also the reboot fixed it and I imagine if the keyboard was set to a different lang. that wouldn't be changed on reboot. I figured it just got confused and needed some downtime(I don't reboot for weeks at a time, Hibernate is awesome).

Everybody take note: Hard drives are dirt cheap! Hiring Zombies to recover the data usually isn't. Besides as I have seen a few times; nobody ever has a backup problem, but quite a few people have recovery problems. Wink

what you see are book keeping errors, just let the whole process complete and all your problems of firefox freezing and stuff like that will go away...

this happens if somehow your computer has powerloss without being able to cleanly shutdown, and some file fragments were not written to the disk correctly....

so dont worry the computer is fixing itself and will heal itself in sometime, or as in your case healed itself ( ie the file system )

I don't know if this is worth anything but I have never (so far at least) got that blue check disk screen after manually powering down. I think it is because I have Norton Go Back installed.

I know, I know, Norton is evil Laughing

but really it has saved me more times then I care to remember Smile
