Selling my car on manchester gumtree at the minute, and had an email from a guy asking for more pictures of the car, and for my asking price and was it negotiable.
I duly sent him the details, and about 4 days later I get this email back:
Subject: Send me your payment details.
Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2008 06:20:30 -0700
Thanks for your mail and your reply to my Ad.
I like the car and the pictures were quite helpful. Could you send me your contactn information where I can send payment to because as it is now i cannot bring cash as i am not around now and i would direct my company's haulage company to come for the car when the check clears.
So send me your contact address, contact phone number and also the name you want the payment addressed to.
Thanks and have yourself a pleasant day as I wait to read from you soonest,
Anderson.
Now I thought this was a little odd, and I did send him an address to send the cheque to (my work address). i'm now thinking I've made a horrible mistake... any thoughts? Obviously, the car wouldn't be going anywhere without a letter from my bank stating the funds had cleared, and noone in their right mind would send money to a haulage company through western union, but still... |

Please copy the whole email with header, the spaghetti part that shows when you click "show original" to a message here and we can figure out where your friend emailed from.
If in doubt, don't answer the email and figure out what real life info he has on you like phone, address and name.
Edit: This is how I should have started. Welcome here, if this is a scam, we can help you !
linky to something to read while you're waiting for an answer:) |

@Snoozum - I would check the ip address of where he is from and see if it matches with what he has said. There is nothing wrong with receiving a check, I have several fake checks at my place right now, it is when you try to cash them that you have problems. It sounds scammerish but you can be certain it is if the check is more than the agreed price.
Also try looking up information about the buyer, see if his name and address matches in directory look ups. Basically be skeptically cautious but no need to be cynical.
From what you provided, I would need more information to make sure he was a scammer or legit.
Edit: because Bill2 posted before me
part deux - I just thought of this, when you get the check, call the issuing Bank and give them the information on it, to double check for yourself on it's legitimacy before you even try to cash it. |

The header put in http://headertool.apelord.com/headers
comes back as --- 209.214.255.19 Satellite Provider--- after roaming the USA I'll see where that leads me and report back here.
Edit: 1st read above check the cheque first by phone at the bank !
Ip# comes back as Jacksonville Florida, could that be your buyer? |

Florida would be a strange place for him to purchase my car, given that I live in Manchester UK and it's a right hand drive car!
Oh well, thanks guys - appreciate it! |
