It's a "new" media with new options and most victims aren't really proud of loosing money so getting your facts there is hard. Your local cop knows it's there but won't do a thing as he isn't trained for it.
Internet kiddo porn is now slowly developing and some police bureaus are trying to prevent it.
Your best source is baiters, they smell a scam before is drops in their mailbox and the best ones live here at 419eater.com. I've been doing it for almost two years now and I would say that I get the hang of it, but without the backup here I would still be unsure every now and then, they (the scammers) are getting better in it too. You could be the first one to write a book about it, it's been done for ages first with snail mail and then by internet and phone, but no police office is interested when the villains live somewhere out of their jurisdiction.

The 419 scam gets a mention in Martin Meredith's excellent "The State of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independence." On page 581, in a chapter on Nigeria by the late 1990s/early 2000s, he writes:

sorry been a bit busy atm with coursework

ive found few documents on it all and finished a structure on what im gonna write.

im thinkign about includign a section on bating . unsure as of yet

because im doing a networking degree i need a practicle side of the project .

any one know in a education way that i can measure the effect that online fraud has on the internet or on a network connection ?

If you can get access (probably mediated by the IT guys) to the departmental email server, you could get a measure of the number of bytes of 419 mail vs. the total throughput. You should measure that before it hits any spam filters (or probably best, at the first spam filter.) I think you will find that the 419 mail is a significant fraction of the total. You need to do that on a real server, not something you set up yourself, because its users have to have a realistic and long-term exposure to the lad's email harvesting.

The other impact is going to be the malware loaded up by the botnet viruses, which also has a network bandwidth facet.

We've been off line for almost a month (September-October 2007?) due to lads trying to wear our servers down, the same thing happened with some friends from AA419 and a few more. So on their side of the game is measurable so well that they are willing to pay lots to stop us. Rover might have some info on it as he did the defending end of it.

There are some Australian Government websites on Fraud, including 419. They are run by Aust Securities commission and Aust ACCC (Consumer Protection).

These deal with a description of the various frauds, and don't rely heavily on examples, mainly a concise description. They are non baiting sites.

Too hot to handle maybe? Most victims aren't really standing in line to give their comment, some victims even try to believe it even if you show them it is a scam (some video's of Dr Phil on u tube) And everyone can be scammed, just find the right angle at the right time.
Brave to be the first though, maybe you can leave the lid of this cesspit off and they start finally working on a kind of solution.

for my experimental side i am doing somin quite simple.

demonstrating the attack procedure of hacking WEP and possibly also coombining it with something on the usage of the old IIS exploit to gain esculated rights on a users machine . using TFTP to upload a remote file server and use some sort of tool to monitor bandwith then ?

forgot to update this thread ...

Just so people know i did the dissertation got 55% which is a 2:2 ( would have got higher if spell check worked and i got some 1 to proof read it lol)

for the experiment side of my project i had to try and measure how criminal activity can affect some 1s bandwidth

so i decided to do a controlled experiment involving 2 vmware machines and different types of malware / virus's and see how these can affect a users bandwidth. and monitor and record it etc etc .

the teacher said it was quite a unique project and seemed pretty happy with it .

any body intrested in doing a similar project , just send me a PM and ill foward u my dissertation im sure ya could easily get it to a 2:1 with correcting spelling and spending more time doing it... Wink

All in all took me 3 long days to complete , wish i spent more time on it but i have a demanding life lol...

Have you tried the normal sources where you look for academic papers? Like Scholar Google (scholar.google.com), JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org/), Swetswise (https://www.swetswise.com/public/login.do) etc. etc.
Ask at your university library for more suggestions on where to look.

Good luck. Just curious is this an undergraduate, Master's or PhD dissertation? (As a dissertation can mean very different things based on which country you're in).

Edit: sigh. Note to self: read all posts before replying. On the other hand if someone else needs sources for academic papers knock yourself out!
