While it's not as powerful as Photoshop this is a good basic tool for working with your pictures.

I think I'll have to stick with The GIMP for free photo editing.

I've used Photoshop a bit but never really got into the gimp. I heard it described as having a 'clue free' interface which I find funny.

IF I can get used to it does it do the same job as Photoshop?

I've been using GIMP for a long time. Although it's not as friendly as Photoshop, it does his job quite well.
Being a veteran Linux user, GIMP is my favourite photoCHOP tool.

Sort of on line with the OP, I have read that a GIMP add-on called GIMPShop makes the interface of GIMP a lot more like Photoshop

I use GIMP (badly) but have never used PS, so it's not relevant for me

Nobody's born an expert. I ain't an artist, so I cannot use GIMP to it's full potential, but it's a solid program that does it's job. Sometimes I had some hangups in Windows XP, using simultaneously GIMP and PIDGIN. Both of them use GTK, and I think It was PIDGIN's fault. The latest versions (2.3 and 2.4) have a memory leak and several other bugs.
No problems in Slackware 12.0, though.
