Just come back from a great holiday in the States
I would just like some feed back on

A why are the bills all the same size and colour

B will the 1 dollar bill be replaced with a coin

I have a view on Q B dollar coins don�t make so much room in your pocket for being tipped

i suppose they are all the same size to fit in our wallets better? (don't really know) all of the bills aren't the same color any more, the 10 is kinda orangeish now, the new 5 is pinkish, and the 20 is kinda blueish greenish... as for the coin, i don't guess i get the question....

In terms of replacing the dollar bill with a coin - doubtful. There have been a couple of attempts to introduce $1 coins in the past few years (including the Susan B. Anthony dollar and the Sacajawea dollar) but both have failed miserably. The powers-that-be seem not to grasp the idea that people do not want to carry a $1 coin when they could carry a $1 piece of paper, nor that people are reluctant to accept a $1 coin that feels and weighs a bit like a quarter, and which could be accidentally spent thinking it was a quarter.

The big reason, though, that the dollar bill will not disappear is that it is cheaper to make it than any conceivable coin - the penny is more likely to disappear, since it now costs more than 1 cent to make a cent!

I love going to banks and getting a bunch of $1 coins, and a bunch of $2 bills and spending them at restaurants and such.

.....but I'm kinda weird I suppose. Confused

I love the $2.00 bill. They are fun to give out as birthday presents. And, just try putting them into a slot machine at a casino. Laughing

Americans are basically pigheaded when it comes to their money. We don't like to many changes. The majority of them would have a heart attack if they knew the Kiwis had bills with windows in them.

I pay with Euro. Those are much more colourfull. Esp. the green ones Wink

I always understood that there's a deep seated public resistance in the US to the idea of replacing $1 bills with coins so attempts have always failed. Australian $1 and $2 coins are a 'gold' colour and quite chunky so there's no risk of mistaking them for smaller denomination thinner 'silver' 5, 10, 20, 50 cent coins. I guess some people feel very threatened by change [boom, boom]

When the UK changed from Pound notes to coins there were problems in certain communities where it's traditional to pin money to a bride's dress. Guests are too tight-fisted to pin a 5 or 10 Pound note so they get around it by using Scottish 1 Pound notes instead Very Happy

Yeah, and the Aussie $1 coin is larger than the Aussie $2 coin. That's logical!

This means they will never replace their $5 note with a coin - they won't be able to make a coin small enough Very Happy

So with the US having a $2 bill now (?) I suppose that makes the saying "as fake as a $2 bill" redundant.

the saying is "as fake as a 3 dollar bill.
the two dollar bill dates back to 100 years ago or so and was rereleased in the 70's as for coins to make a 1, 5, 10, in a coin and having them big enuff not to be confused with say a quarter would be a pain. I would rather have a 10 5 dollars bills in my pocket. than 10 5 dollar coins all those coins would make me walk sideways from the weight.

The latest 1 dollar coin in the US was gold and thicker than a quarter. This is the Sacajawea coin. It is heavy and an annoyance to carry, although bars like to use it as drunks and coins are soon to part company and not through use.

In the UK notes are redesigned every so often I believe this is to keep the counterfeiters and any one up to no good stashing too much money that cant be used when the notes are changed

The really annoying thing about coins is that they slowly wear a hole throught your trouser pockets. So instead of the 'girly purse', I use a bank coin plastic bag. The only problem is I end up sounding like a Morris Dancer with all the change.

I've been a longtime coin and currency collector, and I wish I had seen this thread earlier!

Once in a great while I'll ask for dollar coins at the bank, but when I've used them I've felt like I was handing over a bunch of Chuck E Cheese tokens. They stopped making "Sackies" for general circuation in 2001, as that they made many of them in 2000. Sackies dated 2002 and later were minted for collectors, who got them by either buying mint sets, or rolls/bags of them from the mint. I was able to score a 2003 and a 2005 dollar coin doing roll searches, but I don't get rolls all that often any more since I feel silly whenever I spend these coins.

However, I am a fan of the $2 bill and I like getting them at the bank and using them. $2 bills tend to be graffiti magnets; I've seen all sorts of things written or stamped on them.

$2 are still printed on a "As needed basis" So they are not really worth anything more than $2

The US changes the design of the paper money every five years i think is now the new Law. the $5 was just changed last week. The 5 on the back is now Purple!
The $10 last year - now has a lot more color (red tone) but still keeping the green. $20 has a blue/purpleish tint.

But the older style will never be made "obsolete" as it will just cicrulate till it hits the big fed banks and be replaced. I dont think any Us currency coin or paper money has ever been made obsolete/illegal to use (except when they recalled the $20 Gold Double Eagles in the 1920/30s (forget exact date) You could spend a dime from 1805 if you wanted in a store for 10c - but that would be stupid. You could spend an $1000 or $500
bill that all were pulled from cicrulation 50+ years ago
The $1 coins have been around since the 70s - the Ike Dollar was huge,
the Susan B. was too much like a quarter.

The Sak and now the Presidental dollars have been going around now for just a year. every 4-5 weeks a new one comes out for each president.
They will pause/stop at the ones still living and/or skip over them.) They are gold color just like the Sak. but are the first US coins in a long long time to have edge writing.

^^^ Last year they did another print run of the $2 bill. They carry the series date of 2003A. This series was printed for all 12 Federal Reserve districts, thus opening up more opportunities for collectors who want to get one from each Federal Reserve Bank.

I wish they'd put the Monticello back on the backs of these.

I always have to look carefully at US paper money when I'm there. I know the bills are somewhat different but it's not obvious to visitors who aren't used to handling them and I'm not used to having $1 bills at all. When I hand over a pile of them I feel like I'm spending a lot more Confused

Aussie bills are great - made of plastic so they don't fall apart in the wash and distinctive colours so you can instantly see what's what. $5 = purple, $10 = blue, $20 = red, $50 = yellow, $100 = green.

US money wont fall apart in the wash at all! i have "washed" money many many times.. it really isnt "paper" its a hybrid of cotton type paper - what the full stuff that goes in to make it is top-secret.

Now you may FADE the money a little washing int a few times but you wont wash the ink out at all or have it fall apart like that note from that hot girl you met at the club with her number on it

Another nice little thing in OZ is that the notes are different sizes making it easier for blind people to work with.

The 50 is kind of bluish, with light red stripes in a small area, and the 100 is supposed to get a similar colorized redesign later this year, also supposedly with a shifting image. The 1 isn't going to change. About the dollar coin, the latest attempt to get people to use it is a Presidential collecter's series, like the 50 state quarter series, but the only way I think they'll get people to use the coin is to get rid of the bill, and that probably wouldn't go over too well.
