This is a standard recovery scam. It's not as common as the lottery or the widow/orphan/next-o-kin, but still pretty popular with the lads. Often they'll claim they're from the UN, and they play out just like any 419.

I like to start out by insisting that there's been some mistake, since I've never been scammed in my life except by a girl who sold me 2 grams of baby powder in a public bathroom one time. Only once has a lad ever asked me about the baby powder.

I usually make them agree that instead of the $500,000.00 they want to pay me I will only get what has been taken from me, 6 payments of $1750.00 each. We usually go back and forth 2 or 3 times before they understand. It sure sets the hook for making them think I've been had before.

It just says something like new email address, You can Google it, it seems to be a big deal on new scam letters,can You believe that? Wink

About a year ago I got a money recovery letter and a little way in threw them for a loop by telling them to forget the compensation and concentrate on prosecuting the crooks they said they'd caught.

The strange characters are just saying something like "this is my new email address." Yahoo has a really useful feature; when you open a new account you can have it email all your friends to tell them your new address. The scammers purposely open an account in a language the victims wont know and have Yahoo do their spamming for them.

It appears that the ID hasnt been signed. I think I need a different type of ID, maybe a sig along with a handwritten appology letter.

No signature on the ID? Great.

One of the things we do here is to make scammers worse at what they do. When you point out that their ID is rubbish, all you're doing is getting them to make better ID with the signature on it next time.

Always accept appalling ID. Slap for good ID.

Also I find that aggression will only work for 5 or 6 emails, he'll have had enough of you soon. I won't dictate to you how you should bait, but what I will say is that from my experience, a bit of apparent compliance now and then may well make your bait ten times longer.

Yeah, try a more concilliatory tone. Something like:

In my meager experience, when lads twig they just plain disappear. Sending you a message SAYING he's leaving is just more smoke and mirrors. Lads might be married to their scripts, but they're not dumb. This guy is trying to regain control, thinking he'll give you the silent treatment for a while to get you to come around to his way of thinking.

About the phoney ID's being so crappy. I have seen the ones that are sent me so far. Eeeek! I am just a novice with Photoshop/Gimp, but what a joke! Such an obviouse forgery! They cut and pasted the background of the passport right onto the blank part of the page. You would think a child did this work (perhaps one did, these could after all be children working in sordid back rooms working without pay for all I know.)

Yes most of them are amateurish and a lot end up in here the Hall of Shame http://www.419eater.com/html/hall_of_shame.htm but some victims are still fooled by them, regardless of how bad they look. Some people look at what they deem an official looking document and that's good enough for them. That's why as far as we and the lads are concerned, the passports and official documents they send to us are, for all intended purposes, "genuine". We don't want to point out the mistakes to the lads so they can improve on them.

But you already knew that.... Wink

You know, I've seen passports and drivers licences from many different countries (no names mentioned) and I would have to say that comparatively the lads' attempts aren't that bad. Well... they are pretty bad, but so are a lot of nations' official documents.

Fortunately, if you do end up pointing out to a mugu that his ID looks like it was done by Ray Charles, he'll usually just explain that his country is not as advanced as yours. Smile
