1: Who is the 6th Person? Sorry, we are only expecting all 5 of you. Is this one of your internet cafe associates too? If so, then it is acceptable.

2: As of Now I am in Lhasa, Tibet. If there is any emergency, contact the US number that you have by now. Email will result in the fastest and clearest form of communication, So email me or leave a message on the US number. I am now trying to buy a new cell phone since my Japanese cellphone does not provide good service to this part of the world.

3&5: I will have the exact details of where to meet me in the Namche Bazaar, as well as photographs of myself when you check your email again. I am writing to you from an internet cafe, all the information is on my laptop at the hotel. But I will send it soon.

4: We have it arranged that half the Money is in USD and the other half is in Euros. I hope that this is not a problem.

6: Air and Land travel is acceptable.

Other Information:
Please send the pictures of your Journey everytime you stop in a city and check your email. Please try to report how your trip is going with as much detail as possible.

Also send me information of what route and schedule you have planned for this trip. When are you going on air? is it expensive?

I am really shocked these guys can afford to fly part of their trip. Having money means we can do a lot of fun stuff. They will send pictures soon.

I will meet you in the Lobby of the Everest View Hotel, I will not actually be staying there, but it is a very comfortable and safe place to meet. It is safe for me because I will not have to worry about my safety for carrying so much money.

The Everest View Hotel is the most famous Hotel in the region, so you will not have trouble finding it.

Go on with your Pilgrimage! and dont forget to send us reports and pictures of your trip as often as you can.

My experience is that most things have one cost for Westerners and another for locals or those who know better. That applies to flights or bottles of coke. The cost won't be insignificant to them, but not as much you may think.

The one place where penny pinching will cost them dearly is when it comes to making arrangements to get inside the National Park.

One thing to bear in mind is that Kathmandu is full of companies and set ups arranging trips to the mountains and even if they deal with some shady cut price outfit they are liable to open their eyes to the difficulties and problems.

One tactic could be to put them off arranging this through any organised company by warning them of all the thieves and conmen waiting to rip them off. They could get as close as possible using what they call 'night buses' which even frighten the locals. They regularly shoot off the mountain sides and can be quite lethal, but they are dirt cheap to use.

This will still leave them a nice trek to get to the National Park. The entrances are few and far between, due to the mountains, and guarded by armed soldiers who will be expecting to see valid passes and probably some cash too. Without a pass they'd be royally ripped off to get access, and without any back up they would be in a very dicey situation. So you need to decide what option you want to guide them towards - going to the edge of the National Park blind or allowing them to go further on an organised trip.

With all that snow they are going to encounter I think they ought to learn to ski. Also, so they can save money, get them to make their own equipment en route.

Gomer has a point - there are countless opportunities for them to wise up once they are in Khatmandu - not only if they contact a trekking comapny, but also if they go through the correct channels to get a trekking permit (hours of waiting in queues for stamps). One enquiry about the church and all is lost.
Obviously they musn't mention the church - detailed instructions will be given once they get to Namche - but onother bit of fun is if you can persuade them to fly to Lukla without bothering to get a trekking permit.

Does anyone know if you CAN get a ticket to Lukla without a permit (I queued like a good boy). If they can fly then they will find a Rs200 fee (1983) to get in the park itself. When I went it was a half day trek from Lukla and no bastard told me about it, so I had to wait until no-one was looking and then run past (I had some pretty good explaining to do when i came out and they nabbed me and found I hadn't logged in). If they get caught with insufficient funds and/or no permit, they would have a 2 week walk back or an expensive flight. No doubt with Namche just hours away they would do what I did.. hopefully they wouldn't get caught Smile

If they take the bus to Jiri (which in 1983 was the end of the road) again they have all sorts of opportunities to get wise before they go too far. And god forbid they email the Everest View Hotel (it was tents in my day!).

I dont know when it is supposed to happen, but I thought I read something about the Chinese goverment shutting down access to the higher camps for like 10 days to do the Olympic Torch run. Just a tidbit of info, dont know if it will help.

For what it's worth, they aren't joking about being from a very hot place - Tenali is hot, dry, and generally unbearable in the Summers. Maybe the ought to "bare" something to bear the cold? (On second thoughts, having seen the tattoo photos...)

I've had a look on Googleearth for Namche bazar, and I have some bad news for you.
The TWAT church got there first. Wink

The location of Namche Bazar is 27�49′N 86�43′E
Find Kathmandu, go a looooong way right, and slightly up.
