To put it in simple terms, I work for a private school as a tutor, and they pay by the month. I was paid a good amount of money because I filled in for a lot of people and I got paid for it. No problems there. However, I deposited the cheque and I found out today that the cheque had bounced. What are my options in this? I haven't taken this to my employer yet, but should I tell them that this has happened?

You should go steaming in there demanding to know why it has happened, its your wages and if you worked for it you are entitled to it.

Seriously though, they told me that there is more than enough, so bring the cheque and how much I got charged for the bounce and they'll issue a new one...

Can we declare this situation over, or will it continue...

You need to be asking yourself "why did it bounce?", admin error or this school is skint and you're working for free, i would be asking serious questions.

Seems a bit worrying that the cheque bounced in the first place.
If they're willing to cover any expenses seems like it could be some sort of misunderstanding.
If they want you to go to w union to collect payment....

Maybe they maxed their check limit. Some employers put a max on that to prevent a quick account drain by others.

Sometimes businesses have more money process through than they thought would at that time (keeping money in an interest earning account). Sometimes they run "pay check to pay cheque" (with the pay cheque being tuition fees).

Too often businesses (including schools) are poorly run in the financial department. One of my professors called the University I attended USIOU because the payroll was always late.

I would look at their past behavior as a pretty good indicator of future behavior. Ask them about direct deposit. One chap I worked with ALWAYS took his pay cheque to the issuing institution and got cash the day he got paid. I guess he had been burned before.

Glad it worked out... this time.

Chit happens and it happens to our paychecks sometimes.

This happened to my place of employment where 5,000 people work. Checks were bouncing to the moon and back. Big mess. When it was finally investigated it was a new employee that forgot to tick the box that sent the money to the correct account. The banks were very understanding and withdrew all penalties and fees. The city was very embarassed and it has never happened again.

I agree with looking at their past track record. If this happens a lot I would ask for cash and look for another employer. Wink

You don't say what country you are in. Many countries, using Internet banking. have a daily limit of withdrawals. If this is inadvertently exceeded, the computer system will bounce the cheque.
In Australia it is a criminal offence to utter a cheque without sufficient funds deliberately, that being the key word.
I would accept the cheque, unless it is from ABC learning. I doubt a reputable organisation would flash your account.
If the second one bounces, they are trading while insolvent, and I would report that to your corporate watchdog, who is likely to suspend them. Giving them your personal bank details does not give them sufficient information to take money out of your account. It is standard commercial practise.

If you are in the US, your local DA may have a bad check restitution program. If you are not paid immediately, I would take the check there.... and find a new job while I was at it.

This happened to me once. I suspected the company was in trouble anyway and then discovered that other employees were demanding their wages in cash because their cheques kept bouncing. I got my coat and left.

I'm in Canada, and so far, I'm the only teacher to have this problem. None of my other colleagues have reported a problem, and the administrator was flummoxed about this. I'm just hoping it's a wrong cheque issue. I'm going there on Friday to teach, so I'll update everyone about this...

Some of the businesses I work for have payroll accounts that they wire funds in from a higher yield account to cover the weekly, or monthly payroll. When the timing gets knocked off things can get a little interesting!

I wouldn't worry to much about it unless they can't cover the check right away. Then that will usually mean that there is a larger problem.

I dont know what type of arangement your employment is however I would presume you are entitled to recieve your pay on time otherwise penalties may be imposed.

You usually dont need to make threats about charging them for the inconvenience which according to some awards is to be paid a waiting time until the money is available.

I doubt your agreement will include too many details on waiting time however i am sure that your employee has a duty to ensure your pay is available to you.

Without getting too angry with them (just yet), give them a call ask to talk to payroll or HR and tell them the cheque has bounced, there is a dishonour fee and you would like to get access to your money now as you need it to pay a bill, buy an ivory back scratcher or you want to go to the pub and blow it on grog and pokies.

It's your money and regardless of why you want it, you are entitled to get it.

So long as you sound like you know what you are entitled to and let them know that you are being very reasonable by not jumping up and down on their desk as others in the same situation would be entitled to do, then it should be fixed very quickly.

You should not be accepting anything less than having immediate access to your funds.

Quick question. This is the first time that a cheque has bounced for me. I've been with the bank for almost two years, I've deposited lots of cheques with them, and they've all cleared with no problems. Will the bank have lost trust with me because of this or do I have another chance?

I've deposited cheques that have bounced before.
The bank didnt seem to be peturbed , apart from charging for administration
After all its not your fault it bounced and if its not a regular occurence I cant see why they'd be bothered

I had this happen and I asked my employer for bank fees. They wanted copies of the charges and then reimbursed me.

I had a bank send me deposit slips with the wrong account number. I was banking by mail and started bouncing checks. No one could understand where the payments were going. The bank was willing to pay charges and reversed all of mine. The sad thing was I only bounced checks to charities and they never said a thing.
