Me meself and I are big fans of breton music since we went to France 3yrs ago. We also like Russian classics, like The Volga Boatman and La Varshovienne.
I got into a patriotic/nationalist mood today.
Here's one of the songs I listen... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddCvge4s3xA
It makes my hair stiff and my arms itching for a sword. |

Nevermind me. I fell into a nationalistic haze.
I'll post some more Romanian/Serbian/Russian wonderfull songs, but I do not think you'll understand what they are saying. Maybe you'll appreciate the music though. |

Any of you listen to good foreign music? |
From who's perspective?
According to the last poll, for ca. 65% of Eater members Chris Brown is "foreign music." |

Oh well, there is no controversy about that... The Eastern European nationalistic/patriotic music is unique.
It really makes you want to fight.
Phoenix, one of the eldest and best Romanian rock bands....
Live too... The lyrics are about hayduks.

This song was also in the soundtrack of a Romanian movie from '74, "Nemuritorii" - The Immortals. Cheesy movie, excellent music.
And a great voice... Veta Biris

I love Xhosa music. Especially Madosini Manqineni and Miriam Makeba (especially the stuff she did with Hugh Masakela)
I also love South African Township Jazz.....
If Opera counts, I despise Italian opera but love it in German.

I like Molotov, a mexican rap band. Most of thier lyrics are in spanish, so i only understand when they are swearing! still sounds suitably angry for my tastes. |

Lotta, on the Township Jazz side who in particular do you recommend?
I'm not sure this is really "township" but I've got a couple discs by Abdullah Ibrahim that I love and one of my very favorite compilations is a disc called "One Night at Moyo" that I picked up at Spier. Who else, who else? |

<br>Isn't there a 'What music are you listening to' thread kicking around and active at the moment? It's the one sandwiched between the fifteen thousand cat threads and the "My lad wants my passport/ID what do I do?" threads.
In answer to the question, I don't listen to any music, apart from The Spice Girls. That's because I'm deaf. Neither do I have a passport, so how could I listen to any foreign music? <runs away and waits for the rollies> |

@Mr Green
If you love Abdullah Ibrahim, try to find an album called "Mannenburg", under his original name...Dollar Brand.
As for SA jazz, there are so very many to chose from:
Moses Khumalo
Pops Mohamed - "Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow"
Hugh Masakela
Mankunku
Robbie Jansen
Raw Soweto township jazz:
Kippie Moeketsi
Boyoyo Boys
Theres an album called "Indestructable beat of Soweto" various artists that is really good township music. |

I'm with weasel and craig, I love middle eastern music. In particular Cheb Mami or any other Rai artist. I think it comes from being out that way a lot, you get used to hearing the call to prayer, and it becomes hypnotic after a while.
KD has a point though, what is foreign music? Well by definition, it's anything from outside your country or continent, so to me Britney Spears is foreign!
In keeping with the topic though, I suppose the OP means what "world music" are you enamoured with. Some of Peter Gabriels African cohorts from the 90's were good, Papa Wemba springs to mind along with Youssou N'Dour. |

Lotta, thanks for the tips - I'll check out the early Abdullah Ibrahim CD you mention and some of the other jazz music too! I've got a couple discs by Hugh Masakela already and some other SA jazz compilation things floating around, but these were new names for me and I can't wait to get some of them into my collection.
As for a couple others to throw into this discussion, I'd highly recommend Toumani Diabate and/or Ali Farka Toure from Mali, especially for anyone who also likes blues. |

As I already said, I like some Russian music. The Red Army Choir sounds great.
About a specific song, The Russian Navy Hymn (the song "The Hunt of Red October" starts with.) |

There is plenty excellent music coming from France and Belgium. French Chanson is something worth checking out IMHO. I am particularly fond of Gainsbourg and Brel.
Serge Gainsbourg - music could be considered NSFW - no need to understand a single word of French to figure out what this song is about...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHiMDB19Dyc
The Vatican found this quite offensive when it was released in 1969.
Jacques Brel has a huge back catalog with lots and lots of excellent songs. Probably his most famous one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEAGoLHMMoA
I like this one a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxsMIqWUGqs
Also worth giving a try: Edith Piaf, Georges Brassens. |
