Anyone else using Windows ME?

I have an old computer which will not run anything newer than Windows ME
which came out around 2000 AD.

We are not alone

Tried it once, most things didn't work, went back to Win98SE.

Then bought an iMac.

Yes I use 95, 98se, ME, XP, OS/2warp and Ubuntu

Got problems? Or just curious if other people are as "old fashioned" as you are Very Happy

I still think that 98se was the best one off all, comparing disk use and speed that is.
Installed a few Vista machines. but there you have no clue at all what you (and Billy G) are doing and the old patch over patch is still going on there, but now without telling the owner of the machine.
Big brother is watching you, Look for "catroot" directories and the daily frequency it "checks" your machine, while not using the normal channels, so your firewall doesn't know (or doesn't want to know Norton360)

I loved 98., finally went to XP, not going any further at the moment, it works for what i want to do, Vista, from what I've seen sucks , I have to relearn too much, and it takes away too many choices about what I what I want to do and how

I used the ME edition forever on my old computer (until that computer broke). Seemed like it was slower, and I too used it for the reason of that machine not wanting to cooperate with newer versions.

Stepping backward into the stoneage, I have an old laptop with windows 3.1 on it

Use 98 with SP2 and you will get everything in ME with out the problems.

I am surprised that xp wouldn't run. Even if you don't use the special xp graphics?

Some of the older computers won't run anything above Win Me because the hardware is too old. If you can upgrade the hardware, you will be able to run XP. If it costs just as much to upgrade the hardware as it does to purchase a computer with XP already installed on it then buying an XP computer would be a better way to go.

My first laptop had ME. It really didn't present much difference in usability to me and seemed to run just as fine as 98SE.

ME was a pathetic attempt MS made to hide the fact that it was nothing else but a graphic shell running on MS-DOS. Which made even it worse to use and manage.
Best thing to do is reformat and put 98se on it. Or w2k if hardware is supportive enough.

It *should* run windows 2000 because windows 2000 was released BEFORE windows ME

Windows 2000 professional is expensive its still around 200 quid.
The min spec for 2000 is ridiculously low

If you want a modern OS for old hardware, you could always look at a lightweight Linux distribution, such as Xubuntu (it's got the standard Ubuntu base system, with a simplified GUI called XFCE).

I never had a problem with ME for the few months I ran it. However it was universally hated among the tech support community, so I gather it did have problems in some cases. If, like me, it worked then you were fine. If, like the ones the tech support guys saw, it didn't work then you had a big problem to sort it out.

Up until recently I've been running Windows 2000 pro, and I certainly wouldn't trust those minimum specs. 512MB and 500MHz would be closer, and remember the disk size is just for the operating system.

If Windows ME works for you, that's fine. If it doesn't Windows 98SE is probably your best alternative.

That or Xubunto. (That's Ubuntu Linux without the KDE/Gnome overhead).

Another option is basic linux running a light weight window manager like Blackbox or Fluxbox or FVWM. Blackbox is very small, I use to know the memory footprint but don't remember now. A great thing about linux; you don't have to run a desktop gui. Window managers work just as well but need a little setup and are much smaller.

My old computer had Win 98SE. Ah those were the days...

I have XP and my mom's laptop has Vista, and she hates it with such a flaming passion...
