If anyone has advice. My Calico Kitty, about 13 years, is drooling, tongue out, and appears to have lost some weight. Her appitite is good, and she drinks water. Could this be a dental episode, a virus, intestinal trouble, or the dreaded "C" word? I think I'll ring the Vet tomorrow, but funds are very low. I do have some antibiotics I could tartrate to make a lower cat sized dose. I know they precribe Amoxicillin for cats.
Thank you.

Please take your cat to the vet. Most vets will work out a payment plan with you. If you self diagnose and medicate you could be wrong and kill the cat. They deserve better for all the comfort they give us.

Talking to a vet is the way to go, Joe; he or she will have a good idea as to what is going on.

By all means Joe, take the cat to the vet. You are in no position to diagnose this yourself.

Joe, could be a number of things. Take note of ANYTHING the cat has eaten in the past 48 hours. Do you have indoor plants kitty isn't used to and may have nibbled? Has kitty snuck food off your dinner plate and if so, what? Change of cat food? Things like tomatoes, onions, garlic and others can be very bad for kitty and unfortunately, a lot of pet foods contain things pets should not eat. Is kitty vomiting and/or has diarrhea? Vet will want to know everything like that.

DO NOT medicate the cat yourself. Let the vet prescribe something if kitty needs it. Your very may want to do a CBC (blood work) on your cat to determine any underlying problems. If they find something you feel you should have noticed, don't punish yourself. Cats have a way of hiding symptoms and may have had a dormant virus for years and years.

In the mean time, don't panic. Keep an eye on her and make notes of any new symptoms.

I will call the vet tomorrow. I agree, I am not in a place to diagnose animals. Except for certain 419 members, but they have to sign a release first. Unusual foods have not been givin, but a CBC is probably a very good starting point.

Good to know Joe.. I didn't think you would have fed off your plate.. Diet one thing the vet will probably ask about. How are her fur and eyes? Are they shiny or dull? Nose doesn't always tell the truth. Eye clarity and fur appearance/texture changes could be indications kitty feels bad.

Our cat, also a calico, went through very similar symptoms and some meds from the vet cleared it up. hoping that everything works out for you and your kitty Joe!

Joe, the vet is the doctor and is the one that can help your kitty. Please take her in as soon as possible. It might be something that needs to be treated before it gets worse. Giving antibiotics to a cat without the vet prescribing that particular antibiotic could badly harm or kill the kitty.

This is very hard to write, but I had to take my old moggy in to the vets on Monday. She was 14 and had renal failure, she was vomiting 2 or 3 times a day, all over the place. Her life had ended up being confined to occasional visits to the kitchen to drink, asleep on the bed, or asleep on the landing.

The vet said it was the kindest, but I haven't been able to sleep without a load of wine every night. I miss the old thing.

I've been there too, adn it hurts to have a pet put down. For many people (me included), our pets are our children. Their healthy lives depend on us, and if we don;t seek the proper medical care when they are sick, then we aren't taking care of them responsibly. I know that vet care is expensive, but many vets will work with a person if they know that they will be paid.

Tiff Tiff is doing much better, and visiting us after a few days in self induced quarentine. Thank you all. Apparently it was a bacterial problem. She is is in my lap now, and still a bit ragged. She has a long and varied history, hence our concern. As we speak, claws are being layed into my leg. A good sign. Thanks all.

Weasel will kill me for this. We did tartrate some Amoxicillin based on weight, and Tiff is doing quite well now.

Arrrgh! Now my big Box Dog is sick. I'm afraid it might be hip displaysia. The vet has him on Tramodol for pain. This has been a difficult winter for everyone in this house.
