@reprob8 - scotch oh yes.
i'm across the pond so i don't see all these brands you mention. you make them sound so good. i like dewars and ushers is too mild. jack for whiskey, jim beam for bourbon, seagrams and the canadian whiskies for the mild buzz....but a nice room temperature glass of Chivas Regal...heaven. |

Macallan, the older the better; I don't do peat.
I found it when I was doing a training course in Cirencester. I asked the hotel landlord for a whisky, and he pointed at the top shelf - fifteen feet of single malts. I started on the left and worked my way across.
My favorite at the moment is a Macallan guest blend, which is bottled at extra strength; it needs about 40% water to bring out the flavour. That is how the Scots drink whisky anyway. Definitely no ice.
Glenfiddick I drink with hot milk and honey when I've got a cold.
All of the distilled spirits were called aqua vitae and used medicinally. The flavors of a lot of them were absolutely terrible so people steeped fruit and herbs in them and invented liqueurs. |

I live "round the corner" from the worlds oldest licenced distillery (Bushmills) so my favourite whiskey is Black Bush (neat, at room temperature). Failing that there is another whisky I am quite partial to........... Glenmorangie with a sherry wood finish. |

I was in the liquor trade for 15 years and can tell you that 99.9999999999% of people would not have a clue which blend they are drinking. You can have a guy who drinks Bells every day and swears it's the best blend, but give him a Grouse and he won't know the difference.
I've lost count of the number of people that have given me gyp because I didn't have their blend in stock but when given another brand and told it's theirs' (I found a bottle in the stock cupboard), drank it without batting an eyelid.
I honestly couldn't name a single customer who could tell the difference between a supermarket blend and a big name blend. So save your money dude!!!
Malts, Irish and Bourbon are a different story. |
I think I'm that .0000000001% person. I swear, I can tell a huge difference between J&B, Chivas, Dewars, etc . J&B actually makes me want to gag sometimes. |

One of the best is Red Breast 12 year old. I worked in a bar during college and most of the Americans that came in became converts. Don't think it's available outside Ireland though, the place where I worked also had Bailey's whiskey, a mere 250 a shot, yes as in a shot...not the bottle.
I also like Tullamore Dew and a Scotch called Ballantines.
Also whiskey does mean water of life in Gaelic. Uisce-water Beatha- Life |

Keep strong mate, you know it ain't worth it! I can sympathise - gave up the ciggies but every time I see someone smoking on TV I just think "ooh I could murder a fag" (fag in the English not American sense, of course - selective homicide of a person because of their sexuality is just not my style) |

A booze thread!
I'm not much of a whiskey snob, but here's what I know...
- Blended stuff is best consumed at room temperature.
- Rye & Coke is a fine fine drink, but don't mix the good stuff.
- Scotch has little things floating in it.
- Bad whiskey doesn't taste any worse on the way back up.
- If you're all out of whiskey, you can always drink Canadian Mist from the USA.
- Jack Daniels DOES go well over ice.
- Whiskey is like rock & roll. Feeling it burn is part of the enjoyment! |

^^^ A tramp's definition of good booze: It's like swallowing a cat and pulling it back up by the tail; it bites all the way down, and scratches all the way back up again. |

@ Hekate
my hubby would bring the matches!
I now stick to grain or "cooking " whisky if I'm going add mixers.
One of the mixes hubby makes is a Rusty Nail- 1 part whisky ( grain! dont waste the malts ) to 1 part Drambuie
PS well done Packman, 14 years is a LOT of will power |

Glenmorangie for taste and Laphroaig for smell (or bouquet if that's your thing), both undiluted.
I wouldn't touch any blended whiskey as they are just too coarse and burn your throat. |

For the couple of people in this thread who say no to water:
I was talking to a close friend of mine today (a lord no-less [yes, unlike the rest of you plebs here on Eater, I do hobnob with the aristocracy]) and he told me that one of his frequent dinner guests was a professional Whiskey-Taster from Scotland. He swore by adding a teaspoon of water to a double shot of whiskey to bring out the flavour. He was not allowed to do this in his work, but wouldn't drink whiskey for pleasure any other way.
So there you go.
P.S. If anyone else needs advice on Cherry Brandy or Creme de Menthe, I'm sure I can find a baron or a knight who will put you straight. |

Been to Laphroaig twice now, and they always recommend a drop or two of water to the glass to awaken the peat as they put it
They do stress the drop or two, not a flood of water, just enough to shake the spirit into action
Ardbeg, Lagavulin, both the same recommendation
next time I'm on Islay I'm going to Jura to try the one from there, it's supposed to beat all of the Islay peats hands down |

Whiskey from Scotland? Does he just specialise in the Irish stuff?
I love Hobnobs, but the aristocracy sucks especially the Duchess of York.
Allegedly . |

Finished off a bottle of Laphroig Cask Strength a couple of months ago. Wonderful, slightly salty taste. Almost through a bottle of Talisker. Got bottles of Glenfiddich Toasted Oak reserve & Ardbeg at Christmas. Yes, I also believe in adding a couple of drops of water, though my brother in law would hang me if he heard me say that. |

Let a wine breathe? Blind taste tests say why bother? I once bought into the sulfites crap.

Distilled drinks are different, I know the fore shots have lower boiling points. I wonder if they evaporate sooner? We need some really good test liquids and a gas chromatograph. |
