Yeah, time off is essential. I disappeared for the month of November, 2007 and thought I was done with Eater (it had something to do with the frustration of the DOS attacks I must admit). Then I logged back on, started laughing at some of the great baits, and cringing at posts by Breadcrumb, Radden and the like -- and boom -- just like old times.

But I think surpassing the two year mark (as I approach it) sort of indicates whether Eater is a passing fad or more of a "way of life".

I disappeared for about a year and half, I simply had no time to devote to the site and the community like I wanted to. I did bait some on my own while I was gone, but they were short lived baits due to my lack of time. In retrospect I am glad I took some time off, it helped me to see the forum and its members in a new light. Firehouse pretty much summed it up on what normally happens though.

I think RL is the biggest killer. And then, memories fade, and the lost ones forget the URL. Very Happy

Alot of our baiters dropped out during the attacks last Fall, and never made it back here. It was for a time a little frustrating. But we've got a boatload of eager n00bs taking up their swords, so the future of this site still looks good to me. Until something funnier comes along, I'm staying right here, and going for 3,000 posts. Very Happy

I'll echo that burnout thing. When people first start they are really pumped about everything. They start up 20 baits. But after a while, it gets tiring. The thrill fades. Business, pleasure, family, etc. get in the way, so to speak. Right now, I am only running two or three baits. I had to really take some time to just slow down. It gets to be a bit much. These baits will run out soon and I think I will be refreshed soon enough to start back with some new baits. Since the beginning of the new year I have been very reserved with my baits, only running a couple. I have been posting a lot here in the meantime in the Baiting Help Forum. Okay, mostly just in the General Chat. Okay, mostly just in the PWT. But I'm lovable and charming so that's no issue. Laughing

@ Luckey.. the first forum I ever frequented was related to my job, it was great fun for about two years. Something happened to it roundabout last summer though, and there seemed to be an influx of bigoted racist new people.. a couple of the Mods didn't seem to mind this, and the site has now degenerated into some sort of anti-muslim moaning shop about the state of the nation and "all these bleedin immigrants". It turned my stomach frankly, it was like being forced to read Richard Littlejohn's column in the Sun, day in and day out.

I guess the flavour of forums changes and evolves (or devolves in that case), which I do understand.
I was a member here by last summer when I drifted away from the other place, and I decided to make this my main focus. I feel really at home here.

I suppose that when I posted this I was a little saddened to be reminded that none of us are here forever.

I have hit a bit of a lull with baiting, but haven't stopped, just slowed down. Like Jojo, I have used the PWT for it's intended purpose: R and R.
I'm still baiting and doing other stuff to fight AFF and don't see myself dropping it any time soon.

I am still baiting but I must admit, I find it rather dull lately unless I have some dumb-ass ready to travel again. For me, the whole baiting thing peaked during the Skeleton Coast bait. That was sort of a tough act to follow. And the only thing that still makes me laugh is when I read my hate mail that I STILL get as a result of the Darfur bait.

I have never done a romance bait. Maybe I will try one of those out to keep things interesting, but if I do, I want to bait an actual person, not one of those bots.

As with any obsession you sometimes have to step back and wonder why you are doing it. I think the attraction to scam baiting is that you are anonymous and get to play out different fantasy roles plus you waste a lot of the lad�s time. On, the down side it can become an addiction so occasionally I go through the "12 step program"; stop to do other things in my life and choose to be a selective baiter. Interestly enough my fellow scam baiters understand the need we have to do this and so the camaraderie is appreciated. My friends just don't understand even though some of them have been scammed. I am glad you brought this discussion up.

I think a lot of people take a break and then return. I first joined Eater in late 2004/early 2005 but took a year off because of my business.
On returning, I've found myself much more involved than I used to be so maybe there is a silver lining.
I often wonder how long I'll stick around this time, but I've got to admit, I'm having way too much fun to quit in the forseeable future.

I had to take time out for a lot of last year due to RL... but still kept in touch with a couple of other members who I'd like to consider as friends now.

The problem I find with Eater is that it can become a compulsion, and as such a huge time soak! That's just my addictive personality showing through, but I know that if I HAVE to do other stuff, then I just have to step away from the forum completely.

For the moment I'm back, and really enjoying reading both the silliness that always goes on, and the ever-entertaining baits. Smile

I still get the same buzz out of baiting I got when I first started. If I find things dull then I can try new twists, characters etc as my imagination is the only barrier. Like Ima, I'm on here virtually every day, suppose it's cos I sort of like you guys.

I tend to think of Eater as this weird social club thing where we screw with criminals and anybody that really sticks around is a highly intelligent, but unrepentant smartasses...or a lawyer.

A social club that sees lots of traffic- people wander in, stick around, wander out, make friends, troll, do goofy crap while drinking, and a place where the older members all gather in front of the fireplace (PWT) to relax a bit while the younger ones run back and forth.

edit: probably a really goofy analogy. Embarassed
