Black hole is just a MASSIVE gravity well. Everything that "falls" into it is squeezed into a mathematical singularity. Some theories believe there are white holes, which spit out info received from a black hole, but this is pretty unlikely. |

The nodes would have six separate wormholes which connect to six different nodes. That's what I meant by that.
And the nodes are powerd with EPR generators, which rely on the Think Tank's discovery that quantum jitter is not truly random but can to some extent be predicted, thereby allowing one to extract energy from otherwise empty space. It's like a stock market, buying just before the market rises and then selling just before it starts to fall.
And yes, that is based on fictional science, but oh well.
EDIT:
Also, when establishing a new wormhole connection, both sides must be communicating. They simultaneously create half of the wormhole, which then "snap" together to form the wormhole. If a third party is intercepting communications and creates a third half of the wormhole closer to one end, the wormhole will be created between the third party's station and the second station. Of course, this would require large amounts of resources to build a node, which most common criminals can't come up with.
Also, there are no aliens except a few non-sentient species, but humans have populated the galaxy and splintered off into smaller groups. There is one major nation which encompasses most of the Milky Way; it is based on Corannon, which is one of the only systems with two inhabitable planets whose orbits are at a 90 degree angle with one another. The rest are mostly small clans, occupying usually anywhere from 50 to 100 systems.
The Andromeda expedition hopes to set up a wormhole to Andromeda to facilitate colonization and, hopefully, intelligent alien contact. |

Sorrry. had to nip out for a minute.
It sounds interesting Hacker.
To be honest most of the folk in this universe aren't going to be worrying about the science of how they get from A to B.
Space ship comes, they get on, they get home with the shopping
I mean most of us use cars but how many know the working of the internal combustion engine ( yeah yeah I know SOME do but most dont ) |

But if I have everything planned out, it'll be a lot easier to be consistent. That's one of the problems with Star Trek... the technology changes slightly but fundamentally every few episodes. |

I've just had a fantastic idea. And I bags it.
Take the permanent wormholes idea - trivial power to maintain, reasonable power to create and targetable anywhere in the Universe.
Make the end-point programmable, and allow certain information through about the end-point. eg you can remotely detect the gravity gradient, but you can avoid the heat and material coming through if you don't want it. Make it fail-safe. Maybe if conditions on the two ends are too different there is a barrier effect between the two that requires increased energy to defeat.
Have software that can search for a viable end-point from a random start position.
Now open-source the hardware and the software. Make it very cheap.
Anyone can have one in their basement. Anyone can go exploring, maybe get killed, maybe find a planet made of diamonds. Anyone can have as many planets of their own as they want. There's not even any need to stake a claim, since the chances of two people settling the same planet are tiny. On the other hand, interesting and rare coordinates would be worth a lot of money. Some people spend all day every day surfing the Universe, looking for coordinates that will pay.
Other people spend all day chasing after wormholes that are letting dangerous things in, or precious things out. |

Much like the world today.
I come from an era in the UK where we had 2 stations on black and white TV,
you were lucky if you had a radiogramme to play LPs on,
not all houses had phones,
computers were big massive things that needed thier own air conditioned room (and had less memory than my mobile phone)
slide rules and log tables were the norm in maths classes |

@Thud,
Maintaining an open wormhole needs bigass-starloads of energy.
Actually it's believed that there are small wormholes created and destroyed around us constantly, since wormholes are very unstable, they get destroyed if ANYTHING enters it(some kind of radiation or wave or subatomic particle).
EDIT: My 500th post :* |

You realize, of course, since it's going to be the 24th century we are going to need to fudge some stuff... like "self-maintaining" wormholes, where a chain reaction in the wormhole lining, triggered by a small amount of energy, produces a storm of particles which holds the wormhole open. And kurat, yes I do realize it's not "technically" self maintaining. But is it OK to be a little imprecise? Please? |

I think we missed a bit - by the 24th century all tech will have advanced beyond comprehension just like a modern coffee maker to a 17th century sailor would make no sense whatsover.
Also whats your society going to be like? what are there values, the values will define there needs and such as there aspirations, if there a peaceful, content people then all they will need is local space travel to hotels on the moon, a fast space elevator could achieve that lol.
If there a curious bunch there going to aspire for knowledge so you will need ships able to do some complex stuff like sit near black holes.
Mankind will always need traders, so some of the vehicles will be transportation of goods, perhaps by 24th century teleportation is possible - no need for any craft just point and aim lol. I dont like teleportation not only is it too star - trekkie, its too old fashioned, any serious transport would need guns big planet busting guns - space lads lol.
Tourism, just transplant all the current industries, make the scale intergalactic and advance it a bit and you have an accurate representation of life in 24th century, some should be fun, like the mugu toilet, a robotic hand wipes the bottom lol. |

@kurat Congratulations on the 500.
Yes, I'm fudging and handwaving.
You're not kidding when you say the energy is quite large. ten billion suns does seem a little excessive.

@digital one- The values will be basically the same as today's society. I don't think human values will change that much in two or three hundred years. |

^^^ Yes, values have changed. For example, I nearly always flush the crapper after taking a dump. 2 or 300 years ago I would have just flung the effluence out of a window into the street. Now I only reserve that for special occasions.
So what sort of human values will change?
I suggest that in another 2 or 300 years time, we will all be able to balance the material wonders of technology against our own personal human spirituality. That we will have a raised conciousness of the desired needs and wants of others.
And that we will no longer fart in bed and stick our wives' heads under the covers.
Utopia beckons. |
