I'm setting up a bait with everyone's favorite pet as seen in this link:
http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=128018
I think I can basically write the script for this lad and he'll follow it, no matter what.
I've never done cheque scam baits and don't intend to so I know very little about them except from what I've read on these forums.
My question is this:
If, in theory, it would be possible to have a fake cheque scammer send cheques directly to my lad and have my lad cash them, would this be viewed as unethical, based on our own "code of conduct" ?
The only implications I can think of would be that the lad, if caught, would hopefully end up in a nice concrete room with metal bars but I doubt that the cheque scammer would be caught.
Would this be a case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend? |

First off, I have to say I don't bait cheque lads, so I don't know exactly how those things work. Given this, I see no objection to try to make them fall for a scam, but isn't one lad going to benefit from this? |

^^ Well I think the intention is to get Lad1 to send checks to Lad2. Lad2 cashes & gets arrested. Lad2 will not send the money to Lad2 anyway. Even if Lad2 isn't immediately arrested. But I'm not heavy into check lads either, so I don't know what potential downsides there could be. |

It seems to work in theory. IF lad1(check scammer) sent fake checks to Lad 2, Lad2 cashes them but doesn't send any money back, Lad 1 ends with no money just wasted time while Lad2 gets jail time. Win-win for everyone who fights 419s, right? Don't see how that could violate code of conduct. |

If you notice, lads only accept WU or MG transfers. Or bank transfers. They would not accept a check, so I believe the point is moot. |

It might be worth a try I think. I have a cheque-lad at hand and another lad who keeps desperately asking for money. So I'll try to hook up those two. |

Lad1 sends check to Lad2. Lad2 cashes check. Check turns out to be fake, but who cares, Lad2 has disappeared. Bank is out the money.
I think the bank could be considered an innocent third party here.
Or...
Lad2 now finds he has a source of free checks that he can use to scam real victims! |

^^^ I'm not familiar with the banking system in that part of the globe. But wouldn't the banks have Lad2's real information on file in order for him to open a bank account?
Then again, what would stop the lad from cashing his check at a WU outlet. In that case, I agree that Lad2 would have a source of free money.
Anywho, the point of my question was not to gauge if it was practical but rather to get other members of the eater to consider if it was unethical and get some feedback. |

Any location that the lad tries to cash a check at would be an innocent third party. If lad got an innocent person to try to cash it, that implicates another innocent party. Yes, it could be considered unethical. |

Hmm, these reasons seem quite good. I guess it might not be such a good idea after all.
Well, I'll still get my cheque-lad send the cheques somewhere else, as I have prepared a change of addresses anyway, but then it'll be just another fake address.
Does anybody know which countries are really expensive to send something to? |

It depends on where you are sending from. If you are in the USA, go to the USPS website and try different countries. You will get a general idea of costs. |

Listen to the Mods. They are always right.
If you want somewhere expensive to send the checks, how about a research station in Antarctica? I don't think the brown trucks can drive down there. They use snowmobiles.

If the lads could cash checks, wouldn't they have an accomplice cash their own forgeries instead of mailing them halfway around the world and relying on WU or MG to get their cash? |

Although not all lads are involved in fake cheque scams wouldn't most lads know what a fake cheque looks like and be aware of this kind of scam?
This is probably why, as the Doc has already pointed out that (99% of) lads would not accept a cheque anyway. Mugus know there are too many things that can go wrong and too much of a paper trail is left when it comes to cheques. Most lads are strictly cash only. |
