Lunar eclipse

Theres a lunar eclipse on 20th / 21st Feb.
Toatality 3am GMT

Now its pretty to look at but I'm wondering how many of us could get it into a bait.

If my timing is right that means its about 1am in bits of Africa, (where they will probably only get partial eclipse ), and midnight in Moscow.

Now it could be used to check out if your lad is where thay say thay are, (hee hee ), or keep them up in the wee small hours

Errrr. No. 6AM.

In Africa it will be between 3AM (West Africa) and 6AM (East Africa).

I'm not sure on the times as different sites give me diffrent data.

I'm awful crossing time zones

Seen one place that says Moscow on GMT

Now i feel better for asking my African "friends" to look for the red moon at their time of night.
Would it be really, really naughty now that I know it'll be 4am their time ,to say its midnight and keep them looking til the totality?
ie keep them up all night
looking for the full red moon.

The totality phase is 20 Feb 1901-1951 PST
or 21 Feb 0301-0351 GMT
I believe that West Africa is 1 hour ahead of GMT.

"Z" = "Zero" = GMT (The military calls it "Zulu")

Geographically, parts of West Africa are actually 1 hour *behind* GMT, but use GMT nevertheless. Nigeria is GMT+1 (= A)

However, as far as I know, the Moon has not been informed of the political deviations from geographical time zones, so most times will be off anyway.

My timezone is 2 hours ahead of GMT. I hope I won't have to wait that long, or i'll arrrive at my job like a zombie, bcoz of a sleepless night. Wink

tough luck... I can't see the moon on me windows. That means if I want to see it i'll hafta go outside. Bugger, I'll freeze.

oh well... I had me share of moon and sun eclipses. The total sun eclipse of 1999 had the maximum over my country, and I saw it well.

But then again, there's a partial moon eclipse on 16 august, and I won't miss that!

I remember fondly the first time I saw a moon eclipse, 25 years or something ago. I was but a small boy, and me father showed it to me. He hold me on his shoulders during the eclipse, and explained scientifically what happened (as much as a 4-5 year old can understand), unlike the wimminz (that includes ma, grandma, and great-grandma), who told me it was the werewolf eating the moon Laughing

It's 6:15 pm here in California, on a dark and cloudless night. I'm looking at the moon, and it's about 1/4 obscured already. It is pretty creepy-looking! It's quite a lovely eclipse here in the southland. Very Happy

We all see the same thing simultaneously. Mickey's hands are only pointing to a different number on the clock, depending on where you are.

Nature doesn't care about our clocks or our time zones.

When it's about sun eclipses, it's different.
The total sun eclipse from 1999 had the maximum above my country, started in Afghanistan and ended somewhere in Western Europe or the Atlantic ocean. The shadow moved with the speed of the Earth's rotation, so it started and ended at different times.

Nope. Much faster.

There are three factors that determine the speed in which the total shadow point 'moves': Earth's rotation, Earth's orbit, Moon's orbit.

But... I am the happy owner of some 500 old Lei coins and 2000 old Lei banknotes. They were released by the National Bank of Romania especially for that eveniment. I'll stick to them until I get some high prices Laughing

Oh well... I'll just stick to them. They are a collector's item.
