Looking through the internet this morning for costs and availability of computers, software, phones, internet connections etc for lads, I came across an interesting site. It was as a result of another members query about availability of vista in Africa, but I thought this site was a gem and deserved it's own thread.

It's a Nigeria based bulletin board which discusses all technological issues in Nigeria, how much people got their phones for, what they paid for their laptop, where they get their stuff from etc.
Why applicable to 419eater I hear you ask? Well I think it seems like it's quite lad friendly... one of the discussions about how much you can get a good phone for has some strange replies, one guy stole his, another said proceeds from Maga enabled him to upgrade to a Nokia N95.

AS A DISCLAIMER I'm not saying it's a lad site, it's not. There are African based westerners on there, genuine businessmen etc, so please don't abuse. But you can spot the shady characters, and if you have some time to spare it gives you a good insight into what it costs for your more independant lads to set up the tech side of their operations.

EDIT: Phone lad baiters / killers will enjoy this site in particular I think, it seems infested with the buggers, especially whenever someone says they need to buy something urgently! If you're into killing phone lads, give it a look.

Nairaland is also a very useful site if you want to get some insights into local writing styles, turns of phrases and cultural references. Handy if you want to try playing the role of a lad....

It's very interesting to read for cultural insight in general, as well. There was a lovely thread there at one point where Nigerians discussed 419. The opinions (as can be expected) ran the gamut, from "those greedy foreigners get what they deserve" to "these 419ers should be hung up by their thumbs for continuing to ruin our country with their greed".

Since the thread was very heavy on the former, I often used to point incredulous victims who simply would not believe me when I stated that no, there is no crack squad of heavily armed Nigerian police simply lined up to arrest your lad for stealing from you once you forward their Yahoo address. There are a lot of people who come to victim support sites convinced that all they have to do to get an arrest is report the scam to the foreign police. That thread was a great eye-opener for the naive.

There was also a second thread that detailed a cafe owner having the police called on HIM by the scammers when he tried to throw them out. The scammers were paying bribes to the police and the police were on the side of the money. That was also a grand eye-opener for the naive.
