Recently, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intercepted N14.21 billion fake currencies within three months. The currencies, which were reportedly recovered between October and December last year, consist of �894.774 (N202.77 million), $117.06 million (N13.55 billion) and 2.64 Euros (N451.88 million).

According to the Post Master-General of the Federation, Mallam Ibrahim Baba, the currencies were concealed in more than 4,000 scam letters destined for the United States, Britain, Germany and France. Others are China, Japan, Canada and Brazil. The interception was made possible through the assistance of the British Serious Organized Crime Agency and the Postal Inspectorate Unit of the US Postal Service.

Are the guymen shifting their operations from counterfeit checks to counterfeit money? It's certainly something to watch for, maybe a new twist in the loan/employment scams.

I can't remember where I heard it before, but I recall reading somewhere that there is more counterfeit US currency in West Africa than anywhere else in the world.. This might be a new shift.

I actually received some fake 100 bills from a lad a few months ago. It worked just like the employment scam but their "customer" will send bills instead of a check. They asked me to take the money to Western Union and send them their share. I guess they are hoping the bills will fool the WU agent or that you use different bills. The bills were actually pretty good and would pass black marker and red light test. I would always try talking to lads about them after that and finally one told me they were beaching $1 bills and reprinting on them. I no longer have the bills but took some pictures if you would like to see them.

@Ex^^ Take the money, mark it fake, get it off the streets, it should be treated the same as cheques, as they are about the same size they'll give the same coverage on the wall, although you may want to use less paste.

Whatever the Lads send it is worth it on our part to take it off them, as long as you are aware that is it fake, mark it so, don't do anything stupid with it, there shouldn't be any problems.

How much does it cost to make a fake currency note which would fool the average person? It can't just be a case of using a double-sided colour laser printer, surely.

@ Wright B Hindyou, I was told by a lad that the money was made from real $1 bills by bleaching it and reprinting on it. That was how they passed all the security measures.

I think this is good advice. Especially as I presume it's easier to run off believable fake cheques than believable fake cash. Every note that they use costs them money in the long run.
