Sorry to hear SP.
Being in UK also have ignored guns and booby traps options.
Personally I'd look at the fairly cheap option of window locks .
It's really unlikely that a burglar knew you were in the house - you probably gave him the biggest shock of his cowardly life.
I wouldn't go down grill route and turn your place into a prison. I would look at an alarm. Depending on cash you wish to pay either professional install or you could just install a small wireless & bells only system yourself that would protect most vulnerable points with PIR detectors. |

My sympathies SP.
It's awful to think someone has invaded your private space, rotten feeling .
Its the days after when you jump at the slightest noise and can't sleep.
We were burgled a few years ago, Xmas eve afternoon. Everyone was out for less than an hour. They kicked the front door in. What upset me most , apart from the kids presents getting knicked, was the idea someone had been through all our stuff, they even emptied the kids schoolbags.
I'd say get some window locks if only to help you sleep better |

Sorry to hear that SP. i have found the best defence is simply make you house look lke a hard/risky target. motion detector lights with the sencativity turn up to the point that it will trip almost to easy and the time set for 20 mins. you aim them to cover the aera with out going past the property line and if the timer is set at 15-25 min the bloke (did a say that right?) most likly wont stick are long as it could atract atention to him, 2nd or B as i like to say keep trees and bushes near windows and doors trimmed so no to give the yahoo a place to hide, for windows use a window pin lock . its a window lock that uses a metal pin that goes into the frame of the window. and of corse i also have 7 chihuahuas and if they do get in side they will never get past them, dont laff but its true. ive seen them in action. |

My mum got burgled, mercifully when she was out. A few days later she heard a bang in the bathroom while she was in bed, and called the Police. They found a bowl of pot pourri had fallen into the bath.
Much touching of wood, I haven't been burgled yet. I have a fake alarm box, dummy camera, and genuine 'Radioactive' Hazchem stickers on my garage. I guess my messing with the heads of criminals started way before scambaiting. |

Precisely why I own an attack weiner dog. Once you break in to my house, he will immediately start licking you until you are coated with dog drool, rendering you unable to walk without slipping or grasp anything of value. Glad you're ok, sp

Sympathies SP.
I've been done twice at current house - they got all my cameras, some jewelery and two laptops the first time, and got into my shed (jimmied a steel door) and got all my garden power tools the second. Both times I was out.
Lucky you were in and they didn't get anything.
Sometimes I think "I wish I'd caught them", but then again...... |

As long as your safe SP and they didn't steal your computer then thats the main thing!
It's hard in the UK because if you do anything to hurt people that are invading your property then YOU are the one that get's punished! Where is the logic in that?
Anyway, it's probably best if you can avoid getting burgled altogether - I like reprob8's guard dog idea, Where do i get one? Burger King doesn't sell them! |

Good thing you are ok, but you really ought to look into some type of deterrent if these if these knuckleheads manage to break in.
May I suggest the M240B
7.62mm NATO stopping power.
And with some small modifications you can change it into the M240C, Also know as the "Lad Spit". Imagine, you will be the Hit at the next block BBQ!

I am happy to hear that no one got hurt or that anything was stolen, but seriously, you should get a dog, a big one too. My preference is a labrador retriever. They are incredibly smart, loyal, and wonderful with children. |

@ White King, the same folk who burgled us tried one of our neighbours.
She had hall light on and tv going. She'd been dozing and hadn't heard the door. They were pulling on gloves and kicking the door when she saw them through the spy hole, yelled , and they sauntered off.
The lights and tv noise didnt bother tjhem at all
Pity she hadnt phoned us as hubby and elder son( built like Jason Ogg/ Cpt Carrot ) would have liked a quiet word.
@ YW some landlords dont allow pets. There used to be someone marketed a tape of a dog barking. Dont know if thats still available.

You should get automated heat-seeking taser launchers. Mount them so they point at the door. When the door opens, the intruder is simultaneously attacked by six tasers coming at him from six different directions.
Make sure to turn it off when the pizza guy is coming. (Unless, of course, you like lawsuits) |

Flyspray and / or a fire extinguisher. Sister and her hubby have small dry chemical fire extinguishers just inside the front and rear doors. As an added bonus, one can even extinguish small fires with them |

Thats a good idea, Seven.
The police over here might be more sympathetic if you come out with " I thought someone was trying to warn me there was a fire and this went of in my hand, then I accidently dropped it on them several times " |

Rather than hitting a person with a full extinguisher, discharge it in their face, approach, and then get them on the ground. Do this only if you have no other options. Life is far more important than property or pride. When I was growing up, fighting consisted of getting the person of the ground as quickly as possible and stomping on their head and two lives would be ruined.
I posted up my fix for work. The "blinking" LED on the camera has protected us for many years. I've got stickers I purchased on the internet on my windows at home and wired a PIR motion detector to a radio up in my garage rafters. Any moving heat source in the garage or driveway sets it off and turns on 4 lights and the radio for 5 minutes. I had it on a horrible talk radio station that would drive anyone away but set it to a jazz station. My neighbor thanked me for the change. The garage door opener came with a photobeam that acts as a safety device that stops the motor and turns on two lights. I pulled out one light, screwed in an adapter that converts it to a receptacle that I have plugged in a police scanner. When I am working in the garage I step over the beam. Its good to know that the property owner will fix the PIR lights outside your place. I've 6 outside my house. I get the ones that look like carriage lamps and have them wired in sets so when one turns on, it turns on a companion. That way it looks like they were both turned on with a switch from inside the house. The animals turn them on all the time so I put in those compact fluorescent bulbs to save green house emissions. Inside the house I've been using the BSR X-10 system for 25 years. Really mature, cheap, yet still very high tech.
Edit- Forgot to add that I put a piece of aluminum tape over the daylight sensor on the PIR (Passive InFared) detector in the garage so that it works all the time. For 15 bucks, they are amazing and last forever if you keep them out of direct sunlight. |
