That is sad. A much maligned character in the UK, but for no reason really. Everybody loved you've been framed. And Beadle's about. Well, the first few times they saw it anyway.
Raised masses of cash for charity too, but didn't shout about it.
RIP Beadle fella.

Not everyone Mugatu, not even the first time

However, he did raise a lot for charity and tended to hide his light under a bushel on that score, as Mugatu said.
And he was a bright guy (too bright for the tosh he made his money at), started his career doing "Did you know" facts, puzzles and quizzes for magazines. Always sad for the ones left behind.

Coincidence is a strange thing. Earlier today I was explaining to a work experience kid how I learned to program. I mentioned my old Atari, my parents encouraging me to stop playing Blue Max and start doing something useful with my Christmas present. Then I mentioned 2 articles I read as a young lad which acted as an epithany to me and showed me that my Atari could do something useful.
1 of those articles was Jeremy Beadle talking about how he used an Atari 800 to catalogue jokes. To some extent it showed me that the computer is a tool, and if you can figure out how to apply it to the problem then it can do any task you want.
Sadly my young work experience victim has no idea who Jermey Beadle or Paul Daniels are, but then that doesn't actually matter. Hopefully he'll figure out the point is that we each find people who inspire us to see the world in a somewhat different way.
RIP Jeremy, and thanks for making me wonder for a few days just how you catalogue jokes. |

Yes he was a twat. A twat in the sense that according to newspaper reports, he helped raise 100m (US$200m) for various charities after he had a kidney removed and was then diagnosed with leukaemia. If that's being a twat, it's just a shame there ain't more of them.He received an MBE for his efforts. Scant reward when you see some of the self serving no marks that get knighthoods.
RIP Jeremy. Give God and St Peter hell.

As a child of the 80's, I was quite saddened to see this yesterday. My Saturday nights were based around watching Beadles About when I was a nipper.
He was a good man, he was the Cheiftan at the Highland Games down the road from me a few years ago, and done a damn good job of it. A kind, charming fellow, and most certainly not a twat of any kind
And 100m for Charity is an unbeleivable amount, alot of people have benifited from his work.
RIP Jeremy, you will be sadly missed my good man. Thanks for the laughs and the fond memories of Saturday nights in front of the tellybox laughing at middle aged women who thought aliens had landed in their back garden..

@ Old No.7:
Granted his TV shows weren't to everybodys taste... maybe I'm younger than you, because like Gaz ^^ I was just a youngster when he was on telly at the height of his fame, so perhaps I was easily entertained. I liked his shows though.
(For the US viewers, Beadle pioneered the UK version of what you know as "America's funniest home videos").
I have to agree with Tommo. Anyone who raised 100 million pounds for kids with leukemia is doing well and shouldn't be called a twat. I just recently raised the paltry sum of 500 for a UK charity and it took me forever. It's quite a task to cadge a pound or two out of some people!
He deserved that MBE. |
