I usually ignore the spam/scam emails, but I had someone contact me via IM recently, so I played along.

Yesterday I received a check for $3,850. It was sent to my mailbox at a UPS store. Yeah, I suppose it's possible for them to track me down through there, but I'm not too concerned about it.

Of course, I'm supposed to deposit this check in my bank, then take out the cash (minus my fee of 10%), and Western Union the money to

Blah blah blah, the money is going to a shelter for orphans, and specifically for some kid who needs surgery, blah blah. He sent a picture of a kid with what looks like a tumor growing out of his head that is bigger than the head.

Typical sob story, God Bless, all sorts of crap.

Leading up, I gave him every chance to get out. I told him I was skeptical, told him I didn't believe in God. He still sent the check, still uses emotional appeals to religion to try and win me over. I'm sure he's running a bunch of these at the same time, so can't keep track.

I called the fraud department at the bank the check is from (Suntrust Bank, Richmond VA) to let them know, and they said the account was real, but has already had problems, so it's no surprise to them.

So, now I can tell the sammer that my bank put a two week hold on the check.

If there's interest I can post the chat logs here, but there's really nothing so far that you guys haven't seen a million times.

Welcome to Eater IH8.

By your comment of not worrying if he has your PO box, I'll assume you are aware of our principle of baiting safe. I (and many others) will advise you to drop him for safety.

I would just tell him that the bank said the check was a fake and then stop all communication w/ him. Feel free to resume baiting him from a new address, but having your real info out there for him to be able to get it is not a good idea.

I'm not convinced he's all that evil yet, just persistent. Either that, or he doesn't keep good notes, and he's forgotten that I told him no. I told him the check was being held, so he asked if I could send any money at all. Even $100. I told him hit up the donor again. This was yesterday.

Ok, so I created another email address, and sent him to the mtcn secure site.

He'll have to be really dumb to fall for that because this is a brand new email address/character who he has not interacted with at all. I'm hoping that he's dumb enough/unorganized enough that he's not keeping track of all the scams he's playing.

My first character is still trying to get rid of him.

Once a scammer sends me any pics of dead or badly deformed people or children then they deserve nothing more than the fires of Hell as reward.

We had one who we kept stomping on a while back who found a set of pictures of a starving baby, but he kept setting up new addies and bank accounts. Obviously they spend a lot of time scanning the internet for the most gut wrenching photos they can find so that they can exploit the sick and dying.

Keep in mind that though the scammer may be in Nigeria, the cheque printer may be local to you - that does happen, and there's no teling what type of person they use for that purpose. Sometimes the cheque provider is duped into printing cheques and, bizarre as it may sound, could even believe you are stealing their money and could cause you problems.

There are alternatives to using your own drop box, and I used to just get them posted to a completely fake address. Gold Membership gets you use of safe mail drops run by members.
