Note how this is a wikipedia article, and it's completely unreferenced, so I wouldn't take it as gospel.

As I understand it, "zombie computers" in a bot net are generally controlled by a certain person or group. Usage of the bot net usually requires payment to the people controlling it. The lads aren't going to spend the kind of money required for that when they're perfectly capable of sending enough mails to find victims (or at least us) themselves.
