Part of a rather long bait at the moment has my main character and his daughter staying on the legendary island of R'lyeh (where literary evil god Cthulhu is rumoured to be reposing until the stars are aligned correctly for his return... and so on). Well, a few days after arriving main character has vivid dreams, there are a few earthquakes, main character then locks himself in his hotel room shutting himself off from everyone except a few occasionally strange and depraved emails from his laptop. Daughter is a little concerned but the lad switches to asking her non-stop to make the WU payment.

This morning, main character sends out another incoherent and crazed email:

I wrote:

paid......... girl, paid? okay she is okay??????????? how when with total green coming COMING!!!! tel daani i love hre

What does the lad do? He replies with this:

Lad wrote:

It is nice to hear from you and to know that you are ok.

:

followed by normal "pay soon by WU, we're waiting for the money, etc" script.

What?!?!?

That's being "ok", in his opinion?

Does everyone in here have the same depraved upbring I had? HP Lovecraft? Robert Rankin? Kurt Vonnegut? Iain Bain?

Why do I keep seeing stuff I read under the bedcovers, with a flashlight, and never mentioned at Mass?

"At The Mountains Of Madness"... scared the holy cr@p out of me when I was 15 and read it for the first time. Not because it's horrific, but the setting: feeling the cold barrenness of Antarctica, the total insignificance of the main characters compared to the vastness of where they are, ... the penguins, oh sweet mercy, the penguins!!!

I've been trying to incorporate a Lovecraft theme into a bait for a while now, and this is the first one that's taken hold.

^^I first read 'Pickman's Model' when I was 9; it certainly influenced my enjoyment of the darker and more macabre side of fiction.

Excellent line otter!

It reminds me of Brett Easton Ellis's American Psycho (from where I take my baiter name Pat Bateman). In it, Pat is talking to his dinner guest Paul, when he leans over and says:

TSnerd: It will be published, that's for certain! The current "Cthulhu" episode is just one of many. The whole thing has been running for nearly 9 months now, and he and I have gone through so many things together. And I can foresee it lasting a while longer yet.

Mugatu: Talking of which... is it too early for a progress report?

I only started reading Lovecraft after finding out about it through the Chaosium role-playing game Call Of Cthulhu. I'd definitely like to see the finished bait, Otterfan.

Thus far I've used a Cthulhoid reference but once in a bait; I mentioned a Mr "Abd al-Hazred" as a bank representative who revealed the Lads as scammers; http://www.scamorama.com/reynolds_khan.html. He may be back some day...

One thing I've wondered; what is it about non-Euclidian geometry that drives people insane?
