Because he claims he's *not* a stage magician. He pretends that he can *really* do what he does, with 'special powers.'
This is a first rate, Grade 1A scammer.
He has caused lots of grief, pain, money, and what not to lots of people because of his constant insistence in his 'powers.' Lots of crackpots really believe him, and he just lets them.

He claims not to be a magician but to have the really amazing psychic powers. He was all over the TV around 30 years ago with his amazing spoon bending tricks. He has made a lot of ridiculous claims, including helping Reading Football Club to win by using his psychic powers. And he's a friend of Michael Jackson. That last alone is reason enough, IMHO

Oh, and can I take this opportunity to say that John Edward (US "medium") is a complete and utter scumbag. Latest I hear is that he has been over to Australia to speak with Steve Irwin's widow, and convinced her that Steve is talking to him
