I borrowed this one from the Surplus. It was starting out GREAT and then I made a mistake and killed it. I sent a final message today (7/2) hoping to revive it, but I think this one twigged.

It was my "first", so I would naturally appreciate any comments on improving my tactics in the future (I say "first" because it was actually the second bait I put out there, but the first to bite).

Dear Mr. B:

What happened to Mr. Paul Smith? I was told that he was the fiducially Agent I was supposed to contact and work with to claim my winnings. Mrs. Anita van. warned me in my winning notification letter to be careful of other people abusing their system and that I should keep my winning information confidential for security reasons.

Sir, after 32 years with the United States Marine Corp, I take words like security, protocol, and confidential, very seriously. I cannot release my winning information to you without confirmation from either Mrs. Anita van. or from Mr. Paul Smith. If either of them is unavailable, I will require some other confirmation from you that you are the genuine article.

Also, your letter mentioned a form that was not included in your message. Should I expect this form to come by mail?

Sincerely,

Mr. Roy Gunny L. Swindoll, USMC GySgt; Retired

[A little back-pedaling here, but "Mr. Smith" resurfaced and explained away the message from "Chris .B" well enough. He also re-sent a copy of their first response with another forwarded msg attachment and the e-mail address of another victim (which I also sent a warning to).]

[A quick note here. 1) The use of the word "retard" here is in extremely poor taste, but it fit the character and I wanted to push the scammers a little to see if they'd notice or respond. 2) "Gunny" makes the mistake of using "your" instead of "you're" in this message. I wouldn't point it out except for the fact that it is a HUGE pet peeve of mine and wanted to make a note of the factit was intentional.]

Dear Mr. Smith:

Thank you for contacting me so promptly and explaining Mr. Bs message. It does bring up something though. Unless your gonna be my only contact right up until I get my check for $500000 smackers, were gonna need to come up with some way of making sure that Im not talking to one of those people that abused your system like Mrs. Anita van. warned about.

While I was with the Corp, we often had to send each other messages in code. We came up with a pretty simple code (one of the privates in our group was a retard). I guess I could teach it to you, but youd have to swear not to share it with anyone except people you were going to have send me messages like Mr. B. Can you swear an oath to me that you wont share my very secret Marine code with anyone but authorized people?

You sent me an ATTACHMENT?!?!? DONT EVER SEND ATTACHMENTS TO ME!!! Dont you know that attachments have viruses and will wreck my little 386 computer? No no no. Do not send me attachments. Now Im gonna have to delete every e-mail message in my inbox and scrub out the inside of my computer to make sure I got all those nasty little viruses. And then Im gonna have to go take a bath and I just did that on Saturday night.

Let me know about the code.

Sincerely,

Mr. Roy Gunny L. Swindoll, USMC GySgt; Retired

[Holy Crap!! They're going to go for it!! Sadly, here was where I made what looks like my critical error. I responded with the following message detailing our code. Subject: RE: CODE

Dear Mr. Smith:

Im glad to hear youre up for using a code. It takes me back to the old days of being in the Marines. Once we taught this code to the retard, we were able to get away with all sorts of things, including cursing out our superiors right in front of them. Ha ha! Those were some good days.

Okay. Like I said. This code is very simple:

1. If a word starts with a consonant and a vowel
Put the first letter of the word at the end of the word and add "ay"
EX: Candy = andyC + ay = andycay

2. If a word starts with two consonants
Move the 2 consonants to the end of the word and add "ay"
EX: Grand = randG + ay = randgay

3. If a word starts with a vowel
Just add "way" at the end of the word
EX: Apple = Apple + way = appleway

I also want to show you a secondary code we can use in case either of our e-mail boxes becomes compromised.

a = 4 f = f k = K p = p u = u z = z
b = b g = g l = l q = q v = v
c =  h = H m = m r = r w = w
d = d i =! n =  s = $ x = x
e = 3 j = j o = 0 t = t y =

EX: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog =
tH3 qu!K br0w f0x jump3d 0v3r tH3 l4z d0g

If I suspect either of our e-mail boxes has become compromised I will send you the message: My good friend Hector Gonzales came for a visit today and brought me bagels.

Since we will be sending our messages in code it will look like this:
Ymay oodgay iendfray Ectorhay Onzalesgay amecay orfay away isitvay odaytay andway oughtbray emay agelsbay.

After this, all messages not sent in code will be ignored. I dont want to risk putting my prize winnings in the hands of someone that doesnt deserve it. Thanks so much for understanding and agreeing to send messages in code.

I have noticed that you seem to have your Caps Lock button stuck. Could you check about getting that fixed? It is really hard for me to read your messages in ALL CAPS. It will be even harder once we start writing in code.

Sincerely,

Gunny

It has been several days since I last heard from you. Did you receive my message explaining the code? I hope so because I am writing this in the code.

Attachments to email make me very nervous. You had a form you needed me to fill out. Please send the form by fax to my sister Dolly. Please make sure to include a cover sheet. The cover sheet should look something like this:

<cover sheet>

My sister has a fax machine in her office and will mail me anything you fax to her.

Sincerely,

.............

I haven't heard from them yet and I think they've twigged on me, but hopefully I can get them back. In a couple days (if they don't respond), I'll send them the "code phrase" and switch to the secondary code and try to get a response from them.

Like I said, this was my "first" bait. Any suggestions or thoughts? You think it was sending the message from the wrong account by accident (real accident and not the JDog ASEM method) or did I go too weird too quickly?

I'll let you know if i manage to get them back.

My very first bait has responded and I'm working him over. I think in the next few days I might get my very first trophy (a unique trophy I promise). I'll post the bait here when I've finished with it.

At this point I'm pretty sure the bait is lost and my fish got away, but if nothing else, it's fun to send him annoying messages. If this doesn't get him back, however, I'm going to get his accouts closed (so Gunny's a little petty... what you gonna do about it?)

I was really bummed this one twigged on me... I was looking forward to his messages in Pig Latin!! I couldn't believe he actually went for it.

You might try downloading a free email client and use that program instead of outlook. You can have more than one client running on a machine. Although, I'm not sure that Outlook and Outlook Express would coexist together. But, any other client would prevent any more accidental messages.

The "recall" function only works within the MS Exchange environment. Once the email left your corporate network, it was sent using the Internet standard SMTP protocol. SMTP does not define a "recall" function.

Technically speaking, he did not go for it. Did he drop you because the pig latin wasn't worth effort or the email mixup? Or was it because his account was shut down because somebody else already sent in the LART to the netscape abuse desk? You can always get yourself a new email address / persona and try him again. Sadly, Quin, I can't really use a separate e-mail client for this persona because th e-mail address is an alias for my work address. The messages route through the work address and don't have their own account. So, to see the messages in the separate e-mail client I'd have to get my work stuff anyway. Confused

Well... the question was whether he twigged because I pushed the Pig Latin too early or if the e-mail mix-up scared him off. I do know that his provider hasn't shut down the account because my messages to him are not bouncing back, they just not being answered. He did agree to send messages in code, but given their tenuous grasp of the English language, he may have thought I was insisting that we incorporate a code word into our messages. Unless he responds to my lastest message, I guess I'll never know. Crying or Very sad

That brings back memories for me, we used to call that "back slang" in london in the late 70's and early 80's when me and all my mates used to talk fluently using it, people did not have a clue what we were on about, oh the good old days!!!
