I gather from recent posts that y'all are sick and tired of cat threads.

This is not a cat thread.

This is, however, a puss thread- a playpus thread. So here goes:

This is my new baby platypus, Fluffy. Isn't he so cute? Here's Fluffy from another angle (sorry the picture's not so good- he's very camera shy).

All my life, I've thought of myself as more of a wombat person. I'd always heard that platypuses were unfriendly and hard to train. Plus, my mom is allergic.

But then, this little platypus turned up on my doorstep a few weeks ago. Young, rail-thin, no mother in sight. So naturally I gave him some food. I mean, I'm not heartless. Then he kept coming around, and, well... my little boy just got his clean bill of health from the vet this Thursday. Very Happy

Fluffy's such a sweetie. (And here's another pic. This is the last one, I promise you).

I love my platypus. Very Happy

I was fully prepared to look at the pictures of the platypus and see, well, pictures of your cat.

Then I was going to feel all baited and taken advantage of, and wail and gnash my teeth, and then lock this thread.

I had that all worked out, and you went and ruined it.

I am shocked, shocked that you suspected me of being less than truthful. I mean, I realize that this is a British message board, but I thought the one thing people knew about America was that we have tons of platypi here.

I have a few Platypi in my backyard. They frolic with the mongeese.

Well if the plural of octopus is octopi (or octopode), then shouldn't the plural of platypus be platypi?
I also have a few meese living in my house.

If you want to know their circumference, dont forget: platypi are square.

I'm ok with 'platypi', simply because it sounds cool. Generally, I think, the plural is either 'platypuses' or 'platypus'.

The correct plural of mongoose is mongooses, but I like mongeese better.

I can vaguely remember seeing something on Animal Planet that these things have venom..
so please be carefull with fluffy..

A platypus has nails and when it goes into your skin, it injects venom. If you live down under in Australia, they dig burrows . The holes lead under water and then up to the ground. It would be fun to have them in your back yard so you could hide down in the grass with a shotgun and target practice.

Now the ED response to that: Ummmm Ok - I have no idea if my kid is BSing us or if he's telling the truth. LOL I asked him if they are good to eat - he says he doesn't care - he'd like to go hunting for platypus as they may be quick and a good challenge to shoot - who would need skeet shooting if you could practice on some platypus in your back yard.

LOL - - I think my kid will one day be a good member of this baiting community with his sick sense of humor.

About the poison, or about the backyard sniping?

Platys are poisonous- IIRC they're the only poisonous mammals.
However, they're not very good for target practice- I'd recommend wallabies for that purpose.
