Something similar once happened on Snopes.com a while back. It had a lot of Snopesters amazed at the scammers's chutzpah (given that the Snopes had a section devoted to posting 419 scam emails).

I am brand new here, and got this message as a PM, and I have to admit, I was thrown. It was such a blatant scam, but I just couldn't believe I had gotten it as a PM on 419eater. I knew lads were stupid, but seriously, he picked an anti-scam site as a likely breeding ground for potential victims? What an idiot.

No amplification needed here. We've had kamikaze lads posting up spam before, but this may be the first using the PM system and the first with an IP that leads back to JPN. The voice and brazenness makes it look like something Daniel the Russian love scammer would do from Tokyo. I may be wrong as its a different MO but my simple mind likes to connect the dots.

@Cure many lads come here they simply fail to understand we are not money driven - to them we are either A children or B Jokers, thats why even when they read the posts they still spam - to them were not a threat, obviously they havent read all the forum to them its yet another place to spam, i have seen a few sunday ravers here over the past year or so, but they get locked out quite quickly - i think less than 10 but thats ones ive seen and still 10 out of what 200,000 scammers worldwide - thats not even 1% who know what this website is - the mods take care of the trolls and such we simply relax no need to worry bout stupid lads roaming free.

EDIT - forgot to add the important bit lol, hence once there identified, we jump on them - especially if they use victims of cancer etc.

Actually, kombu is the usual way to read 昆布　(kon-bu) - kelp. Shinbashi (2 stops south of Tokyo station on the Yamanote line) is often written Shimbashi, and 新聞　(shinbun) - newspaper - is often written Shimbun

Snake oil for sure - it's an incredibly popular product here in Japan, and I have seen far too many things offered as "cancer cures" (including kombu-cha -- seaweed tea) in the years I've lived here. Though the vast majority of Japanese people are honest, many are very credulous and gullible, and it's prime territory for scams, I'm afraid.

Seriously folks, this is a spammer, not a scammer. The "English" is all too familiar to my eyes, the poroduct of a machine translation program in which not a single English-speaker was involved (working backwards, I can almost work out what the Japanese was).

$30 - it's a starting point, but I see this sort of thing every day, and these schemes lead to bigger things for the scammer. Even my (Japanese) wife, who's a sensible lady, clutched at this sort of straw in a family tragedy, despite my best efforts to stop her wasting her money.

Sometimes, sad to say, the scammer actually sincerely believes in their miracle cure, or else they are part of a pyramid Ponzi scheme to sell this stuff. Believe me, this is a seriously ****ed up country at times.

But again, ladies and gents of the jury, what you see before you is a spammer, not scammer (at least in the 419 sense).
