The first part of your question is easy, it's is very close to christmas and there is a christmas avatar competition
As to why there are pictures of people in varying stages of undress, Why not, there has been a line drawn, and so long as it is not crossed there is little problem of offending others. |

Something to do with presents, beer, over-eating, and TV.
Just wait until 26 December, the santas, especially the erotic ones will disappear. |

Around 2 weeks ago I've seen my first Santa.
It didn't surprise me that he had some really pretty elves with him, but what made me think was that he was accompanied by an ASTRONAUT!
How the hell is that guy related to Santa?
Makes me think that maybe Santa's not real, and just a scam trying to make people spend money during Christmas... |

Don't let KD mislead you..they don't actually go away. They just hibernate. It's cyclic.
Next up will be President's day, when you'll see lots of hot avatars dressed up like Washington.
Then it will be St. Patrick's Day (hot green avatars slaying snakes), followed by Easter (lots of hot avatars dressed up like bunnies), then flag day, Cinco De Mayo....well, you get the idea.
Arbor Day is the worst, though. All those hot avatars dressed up like trees.

Some people change their avatars like underwear. (For me that is every day, but maybe less frequent for others.) But lots of people change their avatars for various seasons, as others have said. Some change them to a different good looking girl every day. Most wish theirs could be an avatar of yours truly, but that is only wishful thinking. |
