I need to convert a MIDI file to WAV or MP3 to use as a sound track in a movie...

Can anyone do it, or point me to a reliable freeware? It is a one-time thing, so I don't want to buy an application.

I googled... however, I do not install apps I know nothing about... they may come with 'extras'...

I also tried recording it using the sound recorder, but too much hiss and low volume...

There is many problems expanding Midi files and unless you know what you are doing and have the right stuff they can be very hit and miss.
Some will sound great, some will be like you've got your head down a well on the other side of the planet.
Compressing a sound file to sound OK, is nothing like trying to uncompress a a sound file and trying to guess what all of the good stuff was that got chucked out in the first place, the stuff that actually made it sound really great in the first place. Midi files may or may not contain the information required to expand it to a wave.

Best of luck Very Happy

A MIDI file is not a compressed sound file. It is a list of instructions for musical instruments. In doing the conversion, what you are doing is playing the instruments and recording the result.

The musical instruments programmed into Windows and almost certainly Linux and OSX are absolute rubbish. At the very least you need a superior sound card that comes with software that includes a decent "General MIDI" implementation.

But the only way to get really decent sounds is to beg, steal or borrow a synthesiser or keyboard and a MIDI lead for your computer. The sound will be orders of magnitude better.

If you know any keyboard musician with any electronics at all, they could do this for you in five minutes.

ReEdit: Take a look at this: http://www.papelmedia.de/english/mp3.htm good side-by-side comparisons, and an offer of a free demo conversion. That's the other good solution - a third party sound-font for a computer - as good as a dedicated synthesiser.

Winamp can do it. Have a look at the output plugins. The mid->wav conversion always worked like a charm for me.
