Can anyone please tell me what, if anything Western Union and the other money transfer operatives are doing in regard to these scams? Why are no warnings issued when such amounts of money are being transferred to places well known for 419 scams?

There are scam warning posters in Western Union offices, there are also warning leaflets, and I believe, warnings on the back of their forms.

They get their commission and that's how they make a living, they provide the service only and don't want to be involved with the possible risks for paying users Smile

Like you ISP doesn't care if you get a virus on your computer, just pay him for the service.

Tell me, do you run up to people smoking cigarrettes and tell them to stop? Or lurk outside bars proclaiming warnings about liver disease? How about telling that overweight person in the fast food restaurant to get a salad?

WU and other similar organizations have posted warnings. People choose to ignore them.

No, but if I own a bungee jumping company and someone agrees to jump (but decides to loosen the rope despite being warned not to) its the individual's fault.

At the end of the day, WU and MG provide a service which is no doubt useful to some people. The fact that some people abuse the service is just a sad fact of life, but it doesn't mean that the company doesn't do enough. They do as much as can be reasonably expected.

Seriously, Anzac, what do you expect WU to do? What further steps should they take? It's easy to point fingers and cry foul, but far more difficult to offer workable solutions.

Post on your town web sites

Please show us where you have done this, Anzac.

Give us a copy of the bulletin you had posted in your local WU office, or the newspress discussing your meeting with your local LEO's.

Give us an example to follow, instead of telling us that we aren't doing enough.

I think you should make it your personal mission to get Western Union to stop transferring all this money to scammers. Force them to post huge signs warning victims, and insist that they also warn people personally when attempting these transfers.
That would certainly make a huge dent in the money scammers make each year. Very Happy
