[Solved] lost a disk

One of my old servers disks has vanished without trace Sad

scsi 18gb 10k

Its hiding, the server would show an immediate alert if it has died, all the lights are green, its on a dell poweredge 4400 win 2k server
Normally C:\ shows as 32gb roughly today its showing as 16., E is showing correctly at 89GB.
the only way i know its still there is dell openmanager shows it in diagnostics as working but now unused, the wizard cant see it tho :/
Ive run diagnostics - no errors which means something else is wrong.
I dont want to use the 2003 server yet, waiting for ebay for a nice cisco first, i do like good protection, so was trying to set the old machine as a smtp server - got that working and noticed i was running out of space so had a look and 1 drive has mysteriously vanished.

Have you checked with ParcelForce? They can lose disks, and will do everything to find it for you. Laughing

darned if i know lol.

I can do the basics, with the servers most stuff is stick in disk and follow wizard, theres so many now reaching end of life everyone is upgrading.

For some reason the disk seems to have unmounted its-self.
Working off the top of my head, you need to have a look in disk management.
On the computer, assuming Windows XP, try :
To open Disk Management
Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, click Disk Management.
Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
For information about using Disk Management, in Computer Management, click Help on the Action menu.

Is it still there? is it 'mounted' has it reformatted? etc?

I think im going to have to get an expensive call out.

00 - Disk - OS
01 - Disk - AWOL
02 - Disk - DATA
03 - Disk - AWOL
04 - Disk - DATA
05 - Disk - DATA
08 - Disk - DATA
09 - Disk - DATA

(01&03) are awol Backplane channel 0 is showing attached disks, and channel 1 is showing 0 disks.

As im getting 89GB of storage on raid 5, i think only 5 drives are being used for that, leaving 1 as os, that means 1 is awol and 1 i think is being used by raid - but as i dont know im well and truly stuck.

In server 2003 i can just click volume manager and see the disks as icons and work out where every one is, but in 2000 its just showing as 1 big drive and no details.

you didn't get it from uk Home office did you? disks dissappear round there for no reason easy enough.

Solved.

1 disk got accidently labelled global hotspare, and thus vanished.
