This bit of kit looks really useful, a very small, solid state, linux based, cheap laptop. Anyone got one/played with one ?

Eamonn, there are some product reviews here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus-eee-pc-4g/4505-3121_7-32466960.html

Quote:
cnet editors' rating 7.5/10 Very good How we rate products >>
average user rating from 27 users 7.2/10 Very good Read user opinions >>
Product summary

The good: Small, light, and inexpensive; solid-state hard drive is fast and efficient; well-thought-out preinstalled software package.

The bad: Cramped keyboard; very little hard drive space; low screen resolution.

The bottom line: For less than $400, the Asus Eee PC 4G offers an impressive package for portable Web surfing and basic productivity, as long as you keep expectations tempered. The incredibly approachable price outweighs any shortcomings; it's a near perfect choice for a highly portable second or backup laptop.

Lots of reasons I'd like one! Very Happy

However I just got a $450.00 gateway laptop from Tiger Direct With a dual core and 14.1 display. The installed Vista OS lasted a couple of hours. Just long enough to confirm my opinions. 80% ram usage and 30% CPU usage at idle. Shocked

Currently sporting a Fedora 8 install.

I'd probably be more inclined to buy one if they had gone for an embedded linux distro and set it up to be an instant on type of sub-notebook.

Buy one get 4 free

Link is to a news story not a product its not an offer to buy 1 get 4 free its a news story about a mistake in delivery.

Seems the distributer in that case made a mistake, and it looks like it wasnt an isolated mistake.

Soon after receiving his package, StampedingChipmunk Shocked also received a request for the four surplus sub-sub-notebooks to be sent back.

They do an 8gig model, but that won't take too long to fill up.
