Hello everyone,
I was a victim of a 419 check scam. Based on info provided by me, police located the middleman in NC, who admitted to printed forged checks, using a different person's name/address on UPS document and receiving/forwarding funds via Western Union. Unfortunately, it kind of ended there, as the detective didn't feel that there was "criminal intent." A civil atty. was interested in the case, but we couldn't identify assets beyond mortgaged home/property. The cost of an asset search might not justify the risk to possibly come up with nothing. I do get some solace in the knowledge that it save a lot of people a lot of money by their unknowlingly falling victim, too, but it was extremely costly. Any advice is appreciated on this end. Stupid, on my part, for sure, but what's done is done.
I use a specific email address for professional purposes, and a "lad" must've seen my resume on one of the job sites.
First contact:
Quote: |
Dear XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX,
I am sorry for the unusual approach. I have acquired your name and email address through the internet.
As a person who is actively involved or is looking for a way to achieve
my dream I contacted you with a proposal and opportunity that will adequately
favour both of us.
I am a kind Malaysian lawyer that catches my interest and attention on profitable ideas.
My proposition to you is to seek your consent, and to present your kind self as the
next-of-kin and beneficiary of my deceased client, since you have the same last name.
The bank had issued me several notification to provide a next of kin and for the fact that there is no surviving relative or next of kin to inherit the fund of my deceased client, the bank may likely render the fund unserviceable, and I wouldnt want this to happen.
This means that the proceeds of his bank account would be paid to you as his next of kin or the authorized beneficiary. All the legal documents to back up your claim as my client's next-of-kin would be provided by me.
The most important thing I would need is your honest cooperation to in this proposition.
This would be done under a legitimate arrangement that would protect you from any breach of the law.
When the proceeds in his bank account are paid to you, we would share the proceeds on a mutually agreed-upon percentage 70% for me and 30% to your kind self. The total amount is $6.2M.
If this business proposition offends your moral and ethic values, do
accept my sincere apology. Please contact me at once at [email protected]
if you are interested in my proposal so that I can provide you with more details about or ignore it if you are not.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
(Esq) |
At first, I just ignored it, but decided to briefly "request additional information." That got this:
Quote: |
Dear XXXXXXX,
Thanks for urgent reply and sorry for my late response.
I so much appreciate your concern and interest in this transaction.
I have made a master plan that will enable us complete this transaction successfully without any breach of law.
The first step is to obtain affidavit of oath from the Malaysia High Court stating clearly that you are now the authorised beneficiary of the fund.
The next step is to submit an application to the finance firm enclosing a copy of the affidavit document we obtained from the court and other supporting documents in my possession to facilitate the process of fund release. As the authorised beneficiary, the finance firm will release the fund into your bank account.
Attached is my IC, Death Certificate of deceased client and Affidavit form. Please fill-in the attached affidavit form and send it back to me through email attachment together with scan copy of your id or international passport to enhance the approval and prompt action in the high court in issuing affidavit of oath in your favour.
I will also have to prepare an agreement to protect the interest of both us in the
long run.
Once I receive the form from you, I will proceed further.
Best Regards.
|
He had attached a death certificate, affidavit and photo ID. No response yet from me. He must've started to get excited and impatient, though, because he sent this early this morning:
Quote: |
Dear XXXXX,
Thanks for the important remarks.
I would like to explain this through telephone call.
Please send me your direct contact number.
The fund in question is deposited with Affin Bank.
Usually banks request for charges to make fund transfers.
I hope that is the only area financial issues are involved.
The other area is stamp duty fees which the court may demand to issue
affidavit of oath in your favour as the authorised beneficiary of the fund.
I will try my best to incurr court expenses on your behalf.
If you need further explanation, please call me at +60172744385 for more clarification.
Thanks.

This is my first bait, and my intention is to just seem naive and lead him on for a while. Any suggestions? Must say his approach and language is more polished than most.
Thanks for what you all do!

A few observations Say It Right
1 - if he has your personal details then you should drop your bait immediately. You know he is in the USA and I presume you are too, and he likely knows you tried to shop hm to the cops. Though revenge is not usually likely, you are in a more exposed position than most and I never give any real life information to a Lad even half a world away.
2 - you can always try rebaiting him from a fresh e-mail addie with no personal info to connect you, and if you use a provider like gmail that will hide your ip too.
3 - if you want to keep this as your personal private bait, then I would obscure the addie, so that no one else is tempted to bait him too. It also means he won't do a google search and end up here [email protected] and find exactly what you're doing.
Think first - read the stickies - or get a mentor before you bait. For best results do all three. |

Sorry, my initial post wasn't clear. The lad turned out to be in Nigeria. His middleman is in NC. It's long past the bait phase. The middleman already confessed. This is actually a separate issue from the potential bait, indicated in the emails. However, the research led me to this site.

Too late. My only reply was to the AOL address he harvested from a jobs site. It was naive, "oh yeah, please send more information..." and that was all.

OK, will look for a mentor. I'd read many of the threads and recommendations but missed that and am eager to locate some help. To me, this is more of a time-waster for the lad. I just want to get him a little excited that he might have a catch.
Still, if anybody else wants to join in, feel free to PM me. |

Welcome, Say It Right!
One comment about the early-stage bait you've posted above: you probably shouldn't make too much of the scammer's good English at this stage, as most of them operate from scripts early on (or at least have some standard things they will write). As you noticed, this one sent you the next email even though you didn't reply. His English may deteriorate if you lead him off the script. Or then again, it may not. Too early to tell, I think.

This is a good approach: don't write too much in your messages to him. Feel free to act clueless and ask him questions (but not too many per email -- he may ignore most of what you write, especially in the early stages, especially if your messages are long). Everyone has their own baiting style, so it's worth trying things out and seeing what happens. If things don't go to your satisfaction, start fresh with a new scam. |

Sticking the the script from my end too. Here's my first reply since his first fishing expedition:

All of the information has been received and is being reviewed. Please provide me additional information on your deceased client, for me to better able understand this procedure. It sounds is if it's very involved and could be lengthy, Thus, there should be no hurry. Please note that tomorrow is a US holiday. |

Please drop him if you're baiting him from your personal account with your real name. It's not worth the risk to ever bait any scammer with real details.
You *can* rebait him from a safe addy. All you have to do is cut & paste his original message to you, and reply from the addy that you want to use. He won't even notice
Welcome aboard, by the way. Read the stickies. Get a mentor. We love nothing more than helping victims help us fight back.
One final note, regarding the guy in the states. Most likely, he was a victim as well. The scammer contacted him with a "job offer." The "job" was to print & forward checks to "clients." The "clients," of course, were victims such as yourself. |

Bear,
Good information. Thanks for the advice and encouragement. You're right, it might be better to let this current lad go, but he is already foaming at the mouth. He took only an hour to reply, and is not deviating from the script:
Quote: |
Thanks for the important remarks.
I would like to explain this through telephone call.
Please send me your direct contact number.
The fund in question is deposited with Affin Bank, Malaysia. The fund will be released to you through telegraphic transfer.
Usually banks request for charges to make fund transfers.
The charges will be determined by the bank when application is submitted and approval granted. Once we obtain all the requirements, the bank releases the money to you immediately. I will submit the application on your behalf. I will attach supporting documents which I have to obtain from the court that places you as the authorised beneficiary of the fund.
Affidavit of oath will be issued by the court in your favour as the authorised beneficiary of the fund. In order to obtain the documents from the court, stamp duty fees will be charged by the court, but don't worry I will incurr the expenses.
If there are other expenses outside court, we shall share it on mutually agreed basis.
You are getting 30% of the fund while I take 70% when the fund is successfully transfered into your account.
If you need further explanation, please call me at +60172744385 for more clarification.
Thanks. |

^^^ Like has been said earlier, he's still on script. Get yourself a safe email account (I like gmail) and start baiting him again. You'll be back to this point within a day or so.
Oh, and a second on the "get a mentor" suggestion. |
