I agree that it was probably not his initial intention.

There are many types of trolls:

Concern Troll:

Just my two cents, a little while ago I PMed FF and informed him I declined being his mentor, since I sincerely believed he was more interested in creating drama than baits. And that was putting it nicely. I think that it is better to spend time on mentoring those that are actually interested in baiting.

I had the 'pleasure' to spend quite a bit of time with him and I have often thought he was trolling. He never crossed the line in a way that he could be banned, but he knew exactly which buttons to push to annoy the community.

I don't know if it can be done, but I spent some time chatting with FF in the Skype chatroom once, and had him contradicting himself and constantly rewriting his story the whole time. Maybe someone knows how to post it up, cos I have no idea. In all honesty, after that encounter, I take everything he says with a pinch of salt at the least, as complete bullshit as standard.

ok, I'm not defending, nor accusing, I was on messenger with FF this afternoon, he broke our conv for a short time, then started posting this

I'm not going to accuse anyone of anything, FF has never done me harm, he knows of places I've been, we talk about stuff not related to scamming, if some of his posts have been over the top, ok, you have the choice, if you ignore them they die, if you reply, then it becomes a troll thread, feeding on itself.

and we are all guilty of that at some stage, someone can find our buttons and before we know it, we have flamed or insulted the OP, so it feeds on itself as we all man the barricades, choose sides, and lose all rational thought and sight of our main goal.

There's always going to be a little bit of Walter Mitty in all of us, we play roles that in real life, we probably aren't like at all,

It's hard at times to tell when reality and life on here cross over.

Give FF the credit for what he actually did when he did get involved with mass baits, he may actually have been in touch with a level of oga above what most of us never see,

The thing I find interesting about that "chat" is there are absolutely NO apostrophes by either party. The lad, claiming to be an IT person and UK educated. If he were he'd want to, and have the ability to get "Out of Africa". If he wanted to stay it would be to better his country and he would be in politics or something of the sort.

I am glad to see that FF was not banned and he asked to have his account closed. I don't make any comments about him personally, but that chat is just pure made up.

Whatever good he might have done here is blemished by the fact he out right lied in that post. There was no reason for it, he gains nothing by it. If he did not like the community here he was free to leave. Nothing is forcing him to continue to log into eater and read/post. No reason to try to get all huffy about it and make this place out to be some kind of grand conspiracy.

Just my .02 cents.

Excellent post Pers, it took some diplomacy to do that. I've only had time to dip in and out of this thread but it seems you judged FF quickly and correctly.

fair play to you *the Man,* I posted so that those that missed it can make up their own minds. I'm still talking to FF, well, I was till he finds out I've posted the mesage above probably.

As I said, he's not done me any harm, I got a laugh out of most of his threads, they were usually so over the top you would have had to be totally without a sense of humour to bitch about them

It's all a bit Monty Python at times, how far can you stretch credubility?

FF stretched it in here, ok, he should have been doing it with his mugus,

but maybe he was as well

I don't know, all I can go by is that he never did me harm, he gave me a lot of laughs, fair play to the man for being whoever he is

I am not really sure what your post means....

I have no personal opinion of FF. Yes, I probably disagreed with him on ethics, but that does not mean I think the guy should not be posting here or anything.

But when you are a member of a community, be it here, be it at work, be it with real life friends, the thing you don't do to them is lie to them. If that transcript you posted is what was in the OP before FF edited it, then he is out right lying to us. Lying to a lad is one thing, but to others that are supposed to be your "mates" does not fly with me.

Additionally editing the OP after taking heat for it is bad form as well, unless you are editing to clean up spelling or something like that and make it clear that is all you did.

As for your continuing to talk to him, I could care less. I for one am glad he is gone, not because of the views he held, not because of how over the top he expressed those views, but because he flat out lied to us.

Does this happen often do we think? I don't mean the whole overblown FF saga, but people being dishonest to make themselves appear more "accepted"?

The reason I ask is that my radar lit up some months back when a member (who I'll not name) started getting flags, phones, and all other sorts of flashy trinkets in his sig within 2 weeks of signing up. And I mean dozens. He dissapeared within a few weeks, then returned some months later for a week or so. Not exactly a stayer. He never really rang true and seemed to be here purely for the boasting.
On the other hand, I'm in close touch with another few members who are clearly damn good, hard working baiters, and who have no siggy icons whatsoever.

Maybe some of us (I'm including myself) learn slower than others. That's one possibility.

Another is that some people join and falsify bank kills, safaris, IM chats with ogas etc, to feel accepted as part of a group.

Thoughts? Similarities with FF?

"Troll" has become over-used throughout Al Gore's Interwebs. It originally referred to "trolling for fish," but the obvious homonym to a goat-worrying creature that lives under bridges made it something else.

Originally, a troll was sending out nets for attention--any attention. An intentional troll is one who just wants a particular form of attention. Overtime there arose variations on the theme: trolls who have a specific purpose such as looking for sympathy, or to irritate as many posters as possible. On various boards I have seen:

Obviously it is much easier to gain negative attention than positive attention. The goal is the ability to tell others how you pissed a board off.

This individual wanted something different: the regard and respect he did not earn. Established baiters are intimidating: they have all of the fun stories, even Mods are nice to them. In arguments and discussions, their words carry greater weight for obvious reasons. This is the way respect works: it is earned through accomplishments.

There is a wonderful Japanese proverb that basically states he was trying to wear someone greater's underwear! To me, that is different than the Classical Troll [Tm.--Ed.] who just wants attention.

His mistakes were embarrassing for even a newbie. To me, he would be like someone who knows nothing about fly fishing trying to lecture people on a dedicated fly fishing board. He has seen it on television, maybe read an article, but he rarely, if ever, fished. So he tries to make suggestions that seem reasonable unless you actually fly fish!

Then he became upset and rather than just clam up, read, learn, he decided to "up the ante" with increasingly wild claims. He expected attention when he left two or three times which is why he is reading as a guest.

Is that a "Troll?" I think that is different, but a "stink weed by any other name would smell as reak."

What Irish has is pretty much what the OP originally posted. There was a bit more at the bottom. It was posted in two separate quotes and I think that is the first half.

If I remember correctly it ended with the �oga� indicating the they will meet again at 8 gmail time and that the OP new the addie. The oga use the term �addie�. That much I remember for sure.

I thought he was slowly settling down and going with the flow, but ok

I'm not going to castigate anyone for being who they are, you accept people for being people,

In some ways I'm sad that FF left, you didn't have to add to his threads, but they were a welcome diversion from life as we know it
